...but keeps trying anyway.

Figure I might as well make a thread here on /art/, because what's the worst that could happen?
I'll be posting stuff I've made and stuff I'm making, mostly really horrid sketches. Please give me criticism, I do want to improve.

Applejacks' head is really large compared to the rest of her. Try either scaling it down or making her body larger, those would help even her out. She's missing one of her ears too.

Other than that it looks pretty good.

Thanks, yo. I think I'll make AJ smaller as a whole in the picture and make it wider to make her look more alone.

Until then, I hope no one minds if I post random garbage and experiments like this one. Usually, I just erase brush strokes that look off, this time, I just kept them in.

I have seen garbage, good sir, and this is most certainly not it.

>Critique:
-The ear looks rather slim, and tilts back.
Her bangs look short: they should come down enough to cover a some of one eye.
-I don't think the curve of her jaw is round enough, it kind of looks like she has an underbite. I could redline it, if you like.
-Ponytail too short. I'm assuming that's just to fit it on the page, tho.

>>103013

And another sketch. By my own judgement, her head is too big, which makes the tail too small. Also her hind back leg is messing with the perspective.

I don't think the head is too big, I think she's just missing a neck. Compare to your shot of Rarity:
>>102807
It could also be that the body isn't deep enough, which makes it look small, which makes the head look big.

>attached image:
If she's bracing herself against the wall, the hoof on the ground should be pushing her backward against it. I did a quick redline with the leg curving in the opposite direction, which may give a better impression of push.

At this angle, I don't think the hoof against the wall should even be visible, unless she was crossing her leg behind the other.

If she is crossing her legs, the one in behind might look better if it were angled downward.

This is more of a stylistic point, making it purely a matter of preference, but the outside corner of her eye seems quite high. For FiM Ponies, the corner of the eye is usually level with the bottom of the ear.

Even if the head were smaller, the tail does look very short. it could be... I dunno, maybe 50% longer at least. I ballpark the tail about twice as long as the head is wide, if it were straightened out.

One last thing... her lowest eyelash lines up with the top of her pupil, which makes them sort of meld together into one line, visually. It looks kind of odd because her eyelash seems to be part of her eyeball, and suddenly the pupil looks "on top of" the lower eyelid.

By the way: you do a really good job on the shape of the nose, as well as the width of the eyes and the bridge of the nose. That seems to be something that's really hard to get right, too, so that's a feather you can stick that feather in your cap.

Also, her posture gives a nice impression of slumping. Nice body language there.

>>103942
Ponyfeathers! I thought I commented on this!

>tl;dr version:
The back leg looks odd, probably because it doesn't have the corner that usually goes there. She probably has her leg straight, hoof angled back at the knuckle, but theres a sort of zig-zag look that's missing. Like it zag-zigs instead.

When ponies grin like this in FiM, the curve of the lower eyelid extends all the way across the eyelid, rather than just at the corner of the mouth.

Exempli gratia:

Doesn't look bad at all! If there was a comic drawn like this, I'd follow it.

A quick sketch done for the sake of actually having something to show. For some reason, the proportions of fillies are even harder to nail down than those of regular ponies for me, but oh well.
Fun fact: The messier the outlines, the more often I had to erase and redraw something because it wouldn't look right.

For the cheeks and the lower face you're relying on the line art to carry the shape, where for the "arms" the line art is gone. It's a little jarring.

I don't want to ditch outlines entirely, but I haven't figured yet how to use them in a way that does look good. And thanks about the background, I love to insert little details and jokes into there.

Moving on, one of the biggest issues I see with myself is that I can't deviate from the way ponies are drawn in the show. Often, I can't get it to look right any other way. It's something I'm trying to get away from in any case. Considering that, Twilight is certainly the easiest pony to carricaturize. This was boatloads of fun to make.

And I know what you mean about the faces. Unless I'm copying line for line off a screencap, my sketches always feel "off" to me. I'm at that point where I can't decide to just draw what feels right at sketch time or be slavishly show-accurate.

Doesn't help that I want to teach myself to paint, but I'm doing it with characters who are mostly drawn in a flat style with cheated muzzle foreshortening.

Thanks, but I really haven't improved a lot as I still find myself struggling with the same things I did when I started the thread.
The one big issue on my side is patience. As my holidays slowly come to an end, I'm facing less free time and thus less patience to do more elaborate pictures. So I'm sitting here late at night (or early in the morning), angry at myself that nothing I try to quickly draw up comes out looking decent. I can't imagine that to be very healthy.

Is there anything in particular that's bothering you?

AJ's body looks rather large. The hind leg looks rather lean, moving it toward her front would take some width away from her belly. The spine comes out from the neck at an upward angle... in the show the back is flat level where it meets the neck, then curves upward toward the flank.

I could do a redline, if you like. (I have a few thoughts on the hair, too, which would be easier to explain with a visual aid)

The background is kinda minimal, but it has a great atmospheric feeling. The way the more distant hills aren't lined does a lot to add depth

It's kind of difficult to sum up, but for the most part, I am really out of practice, so my judgement for what looks right and what looks wrong has gone worse, and something in the drawing just doesn't seem to come together as well as I had hoped. So, if you have the time, please do redline the thing, so I can see just what exactly went wrong on it.

>The spine comes out from the neck at an upward angle... in the show the back is flat level where it meets the neck, then curves upward toward the flank.

Oh hell, that explains what's off on the body. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

The image also displays yet another case of a problem I've long had: I am glued to the show's art style and don't really know how to get away from it. This applies to character design, eyes and hair. I should be experimenting more to get a feel for what I can do about that, but nearly nothing I tried really led to any result. So far, I haven't yet made anything without solid outlines look good, either.
Thanks for the comments in any case, they are much appreciated.

Much obliged, happy to help. :3

>I should be experimenting more to get a feel for what I can do about that, but nearly nothing I tried really led to any result.
A while back, I learned a trick for how not to fail, at all, ever again... lemme explain:

The technical definition of a "failure" is an outcome that does not meet a predetermined expectation. A success is the opposite: an outcome that does meet a predetermined expectation.

Exempli Gratia: Say you have a scientific experiment: what happens when you drop a ball? You expect it to fall, of course. If you drop the ball, and it doesn't fall, the result is a failure. A rather spectacular one, I should note.

However, in art as well as science, the failures are far more interesting. A success, on the other hand? An outcome that meets it's expectation? That's what we call predictable... those of us in the Fun and Creativity industry refer to this in technical terms (as defined by official Union Vocab Guidelines) as BORING. Think about it: if the ball just fell, how much fun would that be?

So: back to the whole "not failing ever again" thing:

Failures are great for all kinds of things... like jokes and plot twists and being original... but for pure experimentation?

I recommend something else: stop... expecting... anything. Stop trying to do certain things, stop wanting the results to be certain things, stop thinking about what they should be, and just do things. Not for any objective or purpose, other than to see what happens.

No expectations mean no failures. And I mean, on the most fundamental levels, the very concept of failure is no longer applicable, in principal, practice, or theory. No successes are possible either, so you're under much less stress or pressure to achieve any.

Some of the results, you'll like, some of it, you won't. Keep the stuff you like, contemplate the stuff you don't. Then go do some more.

Go for it, You can't possibly fail.

Anyway... I talk too much. Waaay too much. As you've no doubt noticed. I'll be gettin' to work on that redline-and-write-up for you.

Well, that is a very appealing way to look at things. Very often I discard drawings early on just because they don't look good on the first stroke.
One problem I have had for the longest of times is drawing heads that aren't perfectly circular, the shape feels so awkward until you add the face and hair to it. This is something I'm trying to get away from.

In that regard, here's another batch of sketches, some of which I do really like, actually (and could see myself coloring in some way). I'm trying to vary my approach as much as possible and just drawing what comes to mind.

The title of the Book next to Spike reads 'How foals are made'

So, what's the hardest pose for me to draw? So far, it would have to be a pony sleeping.
What's the hardest pony for me to draw? Fluttershy. Drawing her mane with a mouse is an utter nightmare.

The only thing that looks off about this is that her head is tilted upward. It's a well drawn upward tilt, but doesn't seem quite right for a sleeping pony, or for Fluttershy.

Aside from that, looks fine. And by fine, I mean adorable.

>>118816
Seems like you're making good progress, the body proportions look fine. I like her mane.

The corners on the back of Celestia's hind legs are half way from her flank to the ground. She has fairly large primary feathers too, which can be a real pain. Her horn is about 1.5 head-heights long (which is just ridiculous).

Looks sweet! Both in the sense of being heartwarming and adorable, and also being an awesome piece of work.

Celestia's legs laying backward like that seems a bit uncomfortable. In the show, ponies often have their hips turned to the side when they're laying down if they don't have them tucked under themselves.

Foreshortening can be quite the trick to learn and everything will look really weird until you get it down. It can be discouraging at times, but it's too useful to let yourself give up. Specific to the image; you might want to have Fluttershy's left arm sway outwards rather than arching awkwardly back in, and then make the upper part of her right leg more clearly point upwards to give the rest of the leg the proper amount of room to fall into place.

*gasp*, Critique! My one, secret weakness! How did you know?
Thanks for the redline, it does show very clearly what's off. The problem I had when I drew it was that her limbs didn't really want to fit together, along with the body. I didn't even have a pose in mind, so I just drew different things until something ended up looking somewhat acceptable. In either case, thanks, bro.

Perhaps that's what bites me in the arse after all, I don't ever really plan ahead, resulting in some rather awkward things indeed.
Case in point, somehow, Sweetie Belle snuck her way into what should've been a sole sketch of Rarity. Perhaps I'll redo it, we'll see.

your style is your style, i cannot say it's bad - it is coherent although not being canon. abstraction forces the artist to focus on the expression and movement more than anatomically correctness anyways, that is why on this base there is rare BAD pony artwork. it's cute and fun so you get it.

The way the backleg-feet also kind of turn into rounded spheres seems off as well. I understand you were trying to make it look like the hooves were curving, but it just looks odd to me. Maybe adding some of the lines for where the bottom of the hooves would be?

Otherwise it's a very cute concept <3

Thanks a million. How I missed such an obvious error is beyond me.
I was a bit short on time the last few days, and I fear it'll stay that way for the next couple weeks. Still, I managed to get something out, which I hope you like.

Initially, I wanted to do that, but when I was on the background, I felt like making it like a cheesy 80s sitcom or something. This is what I mean when I say I don't think images through very well before I do them.
On that note, I wish I had more time for drawing right now, but I need to learn. Perhaps this is what inspired me to draw this.

Spoilered today's image due to a healthy dosage of fluttershy butt. Foreshortening doesn't really do me any favors, and her hind legs look off as a result. Oh well, who cares.

Your style slightly reminds me of the Rainbow Dash Presents crew of late. I hope that comes across as a compliment.

I really do like their stuff however, so perhaps their style has had more influence in me than I have thought. I think I will never be able to settle on one way to draw eyes and other facial features though.

...However, Flash's clean lineart is something I frankly want to get away from, since I feel there is so much more you can do with just lineart. So here's something I threw together in 10 minutes to test a potential new approach.

How ever you like to draw, that's your style. Feel free to explore till you find something comfortable and enjoy it till you find something new. A cycle of self-rediscovery.

I'm sleepy so this is probably stuff you've already heard a thousand times before, only more eloquently phrased, but anatomy helps. People don't bug out over lineart, they double take over something looking odd, and it rarely ever looks odd because of well planned anatomy.

I'm just biased, I like anatomy. Shading can be a good way to check it, if you care as much as me one day. If you can't figure out how light falls on it, it's probably not accurate to your perception of reality. Generally, if you're drawing something, you want it to align with your perception of reality; it really helps.

Pic sufficiently related

Back in the day, when I was still "searching for my own style", I figured that whatever I'd do, I would never be able to settle down on one thing for long. I think that in the last couple weeks, I have gotten sorta complacent though, so I do want to mix things up more again.
As for anatomy, it's something that still manages to give me lots of trouble every now and then. There's some poses I simply can't nail down to save my life, I should probably work on that some more. Guess why the bottom of today's image is cropped out

One day you'll hit the point where you deliberately choose difficult poses just to fuck with people. I'd like to say I do it just for the challenge, but I'm pretty sure I choose complected poses just to show off.

I wouldn't worry too much about your style getting "sorta complacent" for a few weeks. If you're spending time thinking about your style, you're not spending enough time thinking about improving everywhere else.

Sketches I have saved up for a rainy day. Considering how much I put out in the last couple weeks, I'd say it's rained, there was a hailstorm and now all the streets are flooded. Figuratively, that is.
For what it's worth, the bottom two are new.

Thanks, y'all. As for the sillouhettes, it was kind of a tough one for me. I didn't want to give them full color and detail, since that'd distract from fluttershy, but keeping them all as a gray mash would've been too much.

Until then, this:

I drew something whoops

I never really have a concrete plan in mind when I do images like these, I just start drawing an expression or a pose and make it up as I go along. When it works out, it's easily one of the most fun ways to draw for me, when not, I feel like I'm wasting hours accomplishing nothing. Owell

Not really. I never considered myself especially talented at drawing, nor was it what I thought I'd be doing on a regular basis once, but then I just kept drawing more and more, until I was where I am now.
So by all means, go for it. Who knows, you might just end up discovering your passion for art and become a great artist. Just need to find a way to balance the time it takes with being a software developer too, but art really only takes as much time to make as you want it to.
And hey, if not, what's the worst that could happen?

Hey, don't let your notions hold you back, that's what I'm doing too often as it is. In the end, what matters is whether you like doing it or not.

So, on to today's picture. I really love the look pure lineart + highlights only produces, and wanted to take a shot at slighty more messy lineart, so here this is.

Heh, thanks. For the most part, the way I draw ponies is a fairly pragmatic adaptation of the show's art style, geared towards being easier to draw.

I kinda want to try something more than that these days, however. So, with that in mind, redline me pls.

On the anatomy front, it seems to me that you tend to draw the hind legs with one too few joints in them, as though the hock was a sort of projection from the back of the calf rather than the equivalent of the human ankle - - e.g., in the drawing accompanying post #122737. See the attached sketch by Chuck Jones.
