#Traditional #Digital #Vectors #Canon #OCs #Taking requests #Critique wanted
Oh, hello there /art/, or Ponychan, I'm a rather unimportant artist looking for requests to draw, critique and feedback, as I'm currently looking to grow in a rather narrow time frame, so instead of sitting and doodling the same over and over again, I want to do some things I wouldn't think by myself.

That said, I will draw almost anything you'd like, the only things I ask is not requesting for NSFW and generally being thoughtful in your request, I'm free to decline anything I deem offensive and/or out of my capabilities.

I use Paint tool SAI for my work by the way.

I also take a ton of time for drawing, so excuse my general tardiness.

Hi, wlcome to /art/!

>I want to do some things I wouldn't think by myself.
You wouldn't be the first. :3

I keep an assortment of suggestions on hand for just such an occasion:
-Trixie and Garble (red teenaged dragon from Dragon Quest, the only one who gets actual dialog. That guy) playing chess. You know... wizards like games... dragons like games... chess is a game... it's a thing, am I right?
-A Nightmare Night costume for Celestia.
-Luna cruisin' around on her batpony-drawn chariot (for reference: http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/File:Canterlot_Castle_Chariot.png ). Serioulsy, I dunno why that thing doesn't show up in more fanart. I mean, apart from the fact that it's probably not easy to draw.
-Shining Armour arresting Flim+Flam for... something. They were probably asking for it.

This isn't a request, per se. Just throwing out some suggestions.

I consider this a challenge to come up with a non-OC request if not a sign that I must be rather bored to care this much.

So, depending on your attitudes towards tortoises, I'd like to request some picture of Rainbow Dash riding on Tank's back, either with some overly-dramatic dynamic pose, or bored out of her mind. Your choice/call.

Well, if you're open to requests, I have one I've been wanting to get for a while.

It's a picture frame with a photograph of Applejack and Dash standing under an apple tree, smiling at the camera. The frame and glass is cracked in half down the middle and taped back together.

I hope it's not too hard.

Your version of Aqua Silver came out looking great. Could I get a request filled?

I've always wanted my OC to be drawn up. It would be in the same style as Commander Hurricane, but with the helmet a little different. Same style but covering the eyes, like a gladiator mask. My OC is a pegasus but with a dark green coat and greyish mane/tail.

If you're interested, do you think you could draw this OC of mine? It would be amazing if you could draw him holding a sword by the handle with his mouth.

Maybe this pic would help?

The mask is the key thing. The eyes should be covered, making the mask look like the face is glaring at someone. The hair is the same mohawk style as the Commander Hurricane helmet, just shorter. And of course, dark green coat, grey mane and tail. The armor should match the armor Commander Hurricane wears too. Adding a sword held in his mouth would be awesome.

Hey there!

I really like your ponies! I have a request for an OC that appears in a Fanfic of mine that looks (in my mind) similar to some that you've already done here.

Her name is Willow. She's an earth pony whose body is the color of Rainbow Dash, but her hair is a solid green. Basically, it's the color scheme of the familiar character in this post's pic. She has no cutie mark (part of the story in my fic) and her eyes are yellow. Her big defining feature is her hair, which is excessively long, unkempt and drags on the ground slightly.

If you don't feel like doing it at all, no worries. I'm just putting it out there. Thanks!

>> No. 116674
>I don't know how to draw wings, and I think it shows.
I was going to mention that, actually.

All the feathers in an MLP-style wing tend to be about all the same width... in >>116537 and >>116286, the first and last primaries (the larger feathers) are much thinner than the rest.

Also in those two examples, the tips of the feathers come to point sharp point. MLP feathers, and real ones for that matter, are rounded.

Also also in those two, the feathers sort of come straight out from the body. MLP feathers tend to curve a little, eg.: >>116221 and >>116196

>>116614
This one is looking much more show accurate. The primary feather second from the end is rather short tho... in the show, that's the longest one.

So, in >>116537 and >>116286, the length of the feathers is good, but the shape of them is off. in >>116614, the lengths of the feathers are off, but the shape and width of them are much improved. :3

If there are any other particular subjects you'd like observations on, by all means, bring 'em up. The full and unabridged critique is taking me a bit of time to sort out, because there are a few points I'm having trouble putting into words. It's not like I can't talk about other stuff while I'm trying to figure out how to talk about that stuff, tho. :3

Well what WhiteFox said about the wings is pretty solid, so I'll address the nose. The arc indicating the top of the nose seems to be too long. If you look at any reference pictures, you'll notice that the line isn't much longer than the distance between the nostrils. Also, the line is nearly flat, with only a very slight curve.

The horn and ears look rather large for canon standards as well, but I don't know if those are just stylistic choices or not since I've seen other artists do the same by choice
>> No. 116690
>>116679

And you're right, I like doing big ears, horns, it's just that I don't like making them small, and addressing the nose, I'll keep it in mind, any suggestions for doing them in a different way?

>>116674

I'll try to draw more wings when I have the chance.

And thank you both for your time and patience, this was the reason why I got in here.

Also, and this is completely me, I try to find different ways to draw, I don't like making a copy of the show, so show-accuracy is a low priority for me.

But, that doesn't excuse any of my mistakes, like pointed here >>116674 and here >>116679
>> No. 116696
>>116690
>I try to find different ways to draw,
I know the feeling... in fact, I started drawing ponies expressly because they were completely different from how I usually drew. X3

Just to clarify something: I refer to how something looks in the show's style all the time, but I don't really care about show-accuracy. If something doesn't look right, it just doesn't look right. When I want to come up with a suggestion for a way to make it look right, my first and best resource for trouble shooting is the show. If something looks fine but isn't show accurate, it's fine fine me.

I digress.

>addressing the nose, I'll keep it in mind, any suggestions for doing them in a different way?
The thing I notice is that you draw the nose as an arc and two nostrils, like >>116558, when the angle of the head is at the point where the nose should overlap the eye, as in >>116568. So, for >>116337, >>116286 and AJ in >>116337, it seems like the nose should overlap the eye. Even setting aside matters of show accuracy, by drawing the nose as an arc the face becomes extremely flat because the muzzle looks really short.

You do draw the nose overlapping the far eye if the head is turned far enough... eg.: >>116213, >>116268 and >>116540... but the overlapping tends to occur at lesser angles than these.

For reference, compare to >>116218, http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/File:Twilight_and_Zecora_S02E06.png or http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/File:Twilight_and_Rarity_S02E06.png Note that the nose goes only slightly past the edge of the face, and the width of the far eye is about equal to the width of the bridge of the nose.

Another thing about drawing the nose so it overlaps the far eye is that it makes more room for the mouth to be placed closer to the edge of the face. This might also be a stylistic choice, as I've seen it frequently in anime/manga stuff, but placing the mouth near the middle of the head, rather than below the nose, can really skew the face.

>And thank you both for your time and patience, this was the reason why I got in here.
Hey, no problem! I'm always happy to help. /art/ only does three things, after all: requests, ideas for things to draw, and critique. :3

If you feel like returning the favour, by the way, go comment on someone else's work (writing critique is a good exercise for self-improvement, by the way. I highly recommend it).

I'm going to be completely honest, I'm utterly disappointed with how this one turned out, I couldn't make their heads look tiny enough, so I apologize for not being up to the challenge this time, I have no excuse.

>>116696
I did use draw the nose like in the show, but I always thought I screwed it a lot, so I made myself a way for drawing them easier (for me), so I'm gathering critique and suggestions so I can make it grow, because I'm really making it as I go, blubs is not helping me either, he is the one that gave me the idea to do the nose like that after all...

>If you feel like returning the favour, by the way, go comment on someone else's work (writing critique is a good exercise for self-improvement, by the way. I highly recommend it).

Thats a definitive no-go, I'm too harsh for this board, I need people to take responsibility in their mistakes, and I never mention good qualities in a piece of work, and I know first hand that many people just can't take it, so I reserve my observations for when they're asked exclusively, hope you understand.

In addition to what WhiteFox said, for forward facing pics just draw the arc of the nose shorter and flatter and I think it'll look fine. For sideways facing pics, try aiming for something closer to this one >>116540

>>116729
>Thats a definitive no-go, I'm too harsh for this board
Ah, I know that feel. WhiteFox says I'm a bit too harsh as well. But I can't really help it. I want to help people and that's just what I'm going to do. Just gotta watch my wording a little, that's all. In the very rare occasion that I ever post my art, you are welcome to critique. Actually I do have something posted in a critique thread if you ever bother to search through the threads.

I have this one friend who is an extremely harsh critiquer, but he's amazing at it at the same time. His critiques are very detailed and long. WhiteFox kind of reminds me of him in that regard, which is why I guess I like him so much. They both but a lot of effort into their critiques, which is quite admirable. My friend is not even an artist, yet he understand artistic concepts amazingly well. He gets a lot of hate and is constantly called a parasprite, but I truly admire him. In my opinion, harsh critiques aren't a bad thing, but I suppose it varies from person to person....

>My friend is not even an artist, yet he understand artistic concepts amazingly well. He gets a lot of hate and is constantly called a parasprite.

As long as hes not mean spirited when doing it, one thing is being harsh, another is wanting to see others get angry, there is a point where you have to stop, sadly, many people don't get the point of a critique.

I'm not studying art, hell, I dropped out of industrial design like 6 years ago, but I have some strong foundations that really help me.

But yeah, after I finish this >>116352
I'm going to be reworking the way I draw noses, and I'll try to learn to draw wings, though I really don't know how to do them, I've seen Kryptchild in this board drawing them, maybe I'll borrow some things from there and Fox´s advice.

And I've seen your art everywhere, starting with efchan, you seem like an art student or a very talented artist to say the least

>I need people to take responsibility in their mistakes,
Really? Well in that case, I call on you to take responsibility for your poor critiquing skills!

Caught in a web of your own undoing. :3

>>116753
>In my opinion, harsh critiques aren't a bad thing,
The difference between criticism and critique is that criticism is harsh, while critique is ruthlessly impartial (it neither condones or condemns, but it also leaves no stone unturned). So, "harsh critique" is actually just criticism.

I think of "critique" as "constructive criticism" without the criticism.

>As long as hes not mean spirited when doing it, one thing is being harsh, another is wanting to see others get angry, there is a point where you have to stop, sadly, many people don't get the point of a critique.
I would have to disagree... I've posted critiques whose word count broke the post limit twice over, and been thanked for 'em, so there really isn't a point where I have to stop. The trick is to stay neutral, and there are ways to do that.

The biggest thing, I've found, is to address the art rather than the artist. So, if I said "you drew the leg wrong," using the word "you" directs it at the artist. If I say, "the leg looks drawn wrong," the comment is directed at the artwork. I'm not talking about the artist, I'm talking to the artist about the work.

This might seem like splitting hairs, but it makes a HUGE difference. Most artists already think their work sucks, so there's no limit on how much you can talk about that. The more you talk about them and what they did, the more personal it gets. And when things get personal, people will inevitably feel hurt. For good reason, I would say.

The second thing I've learned is to be descriptive. So, I wouldn't simply say "the leg looks wrong," I'd say "the pose of the leg looks wrong, because it's bent unnaturally."

Third, I don't say things that go without saying. An unnaturally bent leg is obviously wrong, so I don't need to say it's wrong. As a side benefit, cutting out "wrong" makes the comment far more neutral. The comment now looks like this: "The pose of the leg looks bent unnaturally."

This means that sometimes I have to stare off into space for an hour or two to try and find the words to explain why something looks wrong... but that's the part of the critique that's useful, so I was going to do it anyway.

Fourth, and this is a really cheap trick, I try to lighten up every now and then. Say something clever or silly here and there. This is really hard, actually, because it's important not to joke in a way that could seem like it's making fun of the artist.

>>116739
>WhiteFox says I'm a bit too harsh as well.
Not really... it was pretty much just the one time, and I was mostly irritated that you defended yourself by blaming the victim, and threw a strawman attack at me. Your critiquing pretty much just fine, barring the occasional slip up. And, you know, everyone slips-up now and then.

I don't want to make your first points toot, but you haven't seen me critique anytime, so you can't say I have poor critiquing skills, pure fallacy in my opinion sir, if I am to blame for something here is being slow, and for the points that have been addressed here >>116674 >>116679 >>116696 >>116739 for those I am the only one to blame

>I would have to disagree... I've posted critiques whose word count broke the post limit twice over, and been thanked for 'em, so there really isn't a point where I have to stop. The trick is to stay neutral, and there are ways to do that.

Nope, I have read your critiques in this board for a good time, and you have never wanted to intentionally hurt people, as you have currently said, you are objective, that is different, you say everything that is needed in a way that people are encouraged to keep going, that is excellent, I'm different, I tend to attack the art AND the person doing it (same for written works), again, because I need people to know they DID wrong, I don't like doing many things you said in your post, I highlight the bad, so THEY, themselves, can notice the good.

Its not a good way for critiquing beginners or hobbyists, thats why I will never critique on this board, this is a place for enthusiasts to be encouraged to draw, not a place to be torn apart.

Nevertheless, a lot of people I have helped end up hating me, but they end up getting better, and that is the reason why I do it, not to be friendly.

Anyway, expect something soon, but I'm already being lazy here at work, and those chickens aren't going to fry themselves.

Don't like the board, don't like the attitude there, don't like most of the posters, just like /mlp/, /co/, some RP forums etc.

But there are some great people in those places, so I mostly post as anon, just like here and on fimchan.

Understandable. I'm all about supporting the rookies, so I can see where the difference in our outlook comes from.

You're more then welcome to throw comments my way, though. I would, and can, appreciate them. :3

Yep, and I've already forgiven you for it. Water under the bridge. All I'm saying is, apart from that one, lone incident, I really don't have a problem with your commenting. And even in that incident, it wasn't actually the comments that really got to me.

I think tact is good for a critique, but the content is the stuff that really matters. And your comments have some pretty fine content, I'd say.

I understand. We have two reputations: huge overly perverted douchebags and being LGBT friendly. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, as long as you're tolerant and can take insults well. I still find them more interesting than most other image boards and the people there are probably the most unique I've met. Just not at this time since everyone's busy with studies at the moment. Even I sparingly post now a days, and have been posting here a bit more regularly.Consider it "art studies" It's just a matter of waiting for summer again when people come flocking back and things can get cooking again

How about cakelestia?

Sorry for taking so long, I'm still not satisifed with how it came out, I still need a lot of practice with ponies...

Talking about that, requests will remain closed, I'll be posting sketches now and then to get feedback, as this is the only place I can do so with ponies.

I'll be off to draw something, and improve these points >>116674 >>116696 >>116739 >>116756
