I'm Alasou and thanks to you, I've now a deviant art and a tumblr.

It's over here :
http://alasou.deviantart.com/
http://alasou.tumblr.com/

I won't take anymore request (at least for a moment). I plan to start commission and have things to do before.

(Oh... And english isn't my native language and 95% of what I know, i've learned it by myself. So feel free to tell me where I'm wrong. )

Well from the OP your art is adorable. I can't really point out anything in particular so just take this as praise c:

I say go ahead and make a deviantart and you will be met with nothing but positive feedback.

That drawing you have there is just so adorable. I love the soft coloring and the lines.

And don't be afraid of posting here. There is extremely little negative feedback to be found. I'd love to see more of your art. I'm a pretty lousy art critiquer myself, but we trained a white fox to sniff out irregularities and deliver good mature, helpful critiques.

Hi, welcome to /art/! Always good to see new faces around.

>And I really need some help and critics.
/Art/ only does two things: critique, and requests. So you're in the right place. :3

Speaking of which:
>Critique:
As others have mentioned, going by the OP your work is indeed quite adorable.

Her facial expression is very gentle, yet the depth of the emotion is very clear. It takes subtlety to do that, nicely done.

The work shows diligence: you took the time to add a colour field for a background instead of leaving it white, you added a signature, stuff like that. These little finishing touch show that you have respect for your artwork, and take the time to make it presentable.

If the main light source is pointing down and to the left, it seems like her forelock ought to be casting a shadow on part of her face. Her cheek is in shadow, but not her forehead.

Anyway, that's what I notice at first glance. I don't like to say too much until I have a good impression of how an artist works... I'll probably have more to say when you post more work.

Out of curiosity, is there anything in particular you're looking for critique and advice on?

>>118185
>we trained a white fox to sniff out irregularities and deliver good mature, helpful critiques.
What, really? When did that happen?

I'll have to hunt the guy down and introduce myself. :3

>I'm a pretty lousy art critiquer myself,
Oh, stop being so modest. You do just fine at it.

I tend to write big huge long essays but, an honest and clearly worded opinion is far more useful than people imagine. Even if it's brief.

>>118184

Thanks. It's quite encouraging. But now I'm afraid to post something else because you're going to think I was lucky the first time. Damn brain...

>>118189
Every kind of critiques are good. Actually my major problem come more from the fact that I'm alone and never have opinions. Sometimes I show a thing or two to my friends but: 1) I don't have many friends and only two care to take a look. 2) Even if they're nice, they're not really helpful. (I don't take a "lol" or a like on facebook as an advanced critic.)

So for this drawing, it's the first thing I've completed after testing Paint tool SAI. That was one month ago but I haven't draw in color since. (I prefer drawing in monochrome.) I have so many things to work that I don't take enough time to work in color. Plus, I'm very slow because it's a subject that I haven't really mastered... (Ok, I'm totally lost when we speak about color. Especially when you have to choose the color for shadows. What I've learned with painting doesn't seems to work on pc...)

Next time, I will probably post some sketches.

Oh, man, that's even adorabler than I expected. For shading, you could do the shading on a separate layer above the flat colour, making it easier to experiment and adjust. I have no idea how that compares to traditional colouring, though, since I've never tried it.

As for colours, the best thing to do is read up on colour theory and how the colour wheel works, then you keep experimenting and playing with colours while looking at art and design and things around you and study the colour combinations you like and why you like them. It takes a while and a lot of practise to get colours right, but you can make it fun by experimentation and play.

As for the drawing itself, it is super cute. I don't have any complaints about the colours, nor the shading. They both look good to me. One thing might be the sharp angle at the back of their hind legs. One would usually try to avoid sharp angles on "cute" things =)

Hi there! Welcome to /art/.

Your work is so adorable. :3

Also, just keep up the good work. I'm not one to give critiques since I can't spot a lot of the things an artist can, but if something seems off, I will be sure to let you know. :)

I'm glad you decided to join. People here are nice. I used to be a regular here, to this board specifically. I'm gonna be posting for a little while, so you might end up seeing this particular musical steampunk engineering pony quite a bit. :3

Your artwork is just beautiful! And you really capture emotion well, I love looking at them.

You're really very good with color too, especially since you said it's not your preferred method.

What are you saying? This looks excellent =D

I honestly can't see anything wrong with it. It has a very beautiful style to it and it seems you are not scared of drawing backgrounds and objects or even clothing. Major props for that.

What I found very helpful in getting comfortable with colours is studying things like scenery from the show or other art you like. Try to replicate what you see in them and pretty soon you'll get a better understanding of what colours you like and what makes them pretty.
The other thing is to just do it. I know that sounds weird, but you need to practice to learn. =) Same thing goes for colours as it does with inking and shading or skiing or singing or skateboarding.

Dat Linework...
I'm digging the wispy smooth lines and airbrushy colors.

As far as critique goes, I think WhiteFox has it pinned down: there are form shadows (the darkness on the backside of whatever is getting light) and there are cast shadows (the way we usually think of shadows, the part that shows up on the ground when we block the sun with a tree). Your work has form shadows in it, but no cast shadows.

Easy enough to add, just decide where your light source is, draw a line from the light source past the outside edge of the object casting the shadow to the object that the shadow hits. This will define where the shadow ends.

The forms are properly defined, your variance in line weight is subtle but it's there, and they're smoooth. I see nothing shameful. Inkers and letterers do things that as far as I'm concerned can't be done, and your stuff looks like an inker's.

Looking at the human-Scoot, the arms seem a bit short. When standing up straight, arms to their sides, a human's wrist is level with their hip socket.

Her waist looks a little low. The narrowest point of an hourglass figure is halfway between the collarbone and the inseam.

I love the pose. Her shoulders are only loosely drawn in but even so, the way they're turned a bit is very nicely done. The pose shows a lot of movement, too: one arm is tucked in while the other is pushing outward, her shoulders tilted in the opposite direction as her hips, there's some twist in her abdomen... very expressive.

The faces have a variety of emotions, as well as the ones in >>118215 . Some artists tend to stick to a narrow range of what's familiar, which is terrible habit. You show some artistic range, and for that, I salute thee! :3

>>118315
>Easy enough to add, just decide where your light source is, draw a line from the light source past the outside edge of the object casting the shadow to the object that the shadow hits.
When I need to work out shadows, I draw the scene from the viewpoint of the light source. Anything "visible" from that point of view will be lit, and anything blocked from view will be in shadow.

It also tells me which surfaces are angled away from the light source, which will have partial shadows.

For a point-source light that's close to the subject, which will project a big giant shadow, I draw the view in perspective.

I can map out extremely complicated shadows this way... eg.: someone holding their hand up to shield their eyes, and projecting a shadow of their hand across their face, while the shadow of the figure stretches across the floor and up a wall. Most of the time, though, I'll just do a quick and loose sketch to help me visualize everything. It doesn't have to be anymore complicated than I want to make it.

At any rate... I talk too much. Hope this helps! :3

Bottom line, you have nothing to be nervous about, kiddo. Just post your work and collect your feedback.

With your inherent talent (you have what Loomis terms "rhythm", which is that silky smooth line thing that everyone but me seems to be born with) most of it will be positive.

But you'll learn that the negative stuff is the most helpful. Getting your ego completely obliterated by someone who knows what they're talking about and is willing to explain what they don't like will become something that you crave.

Negative feedback and criticism are two different things. The thing about ponies is that everyone has a style. Ponies have no defined anatomy and have the consistency like marshmallow. Everyone here isn't really giving you criticism like redlines because you have your style and the way you draw ponies is adorable/great already. Though there is always room to improve, some of us here just really can't pick out anything that needs changed.

First : I really need a better english's dictionary... I really thought "negative feedback" and "criticism" mean the same. Just more specific.

Secondly : A style is something, and depend of the artist. I'm ok with that. But in a more technical way, I still feel that I could use more advices. (like the shadow stuff, really helpful) But more feeling like, the red line ? I prefer drawing in red, not sure to know why, find it less aggressive than black I guess. But maybe it's just me. Maybe nopony likes it and I should stop. What if everything I do is just an enormous mistake but nopony care to tell me so ?

>But I don't think I have a talent.
I'll tell you a secret... nopony is born with artistic talent. It's a myth. If someone has "talent," it means they've been practicing for two or three years.

>I really thought "negative feedback" and "criticism" mean the same. Just more specific.
Well, kinda. "Criticism" suggests that someone is being rude or harsh (Example: "This sucks"). Negative feedback is pointing out faults and shortcomings, without being rude (Example: "The face looks wrong").

Some people use the term "constructive criticism." This is feedback that harsh and/or mean, but can still be used to improve your skills (Example: "The face looks wrong, it sucks").

I write critique. That's basically positive and negative feedback, phrased politely.

I always make sure to point out what I think an artist is doing right, for two reasons. First, if they know what their strengths are, they can use them to their fullest. Second, if they're good at something, it means they don't have to worry about it so much, and can work on improving something else.

>What if everything I do is just an enormous mistake but nopony care to tell me so ?
I swear, sure as Celestia will raise the sun tomorrow: If you are making mistakes, I will tell you.

I've spent the past eight years improving my commenting skills as best I can. I can talk about an artists problems in great detail. I can do it without hurting their feelings, so I don't need to hold back.

You. Are. Good. Alasou, you are a good artist. Maybe not a great artist, but you're definitely good. You'll get better with practice and there's no limit to how good you could be if you're willing to work for it.

This..?
>>118489
>Started using your DA and you have 32 watchers (including me) in the space of three days. And got on EQD without breaking a sweat.
I'll be totally honest with you: that is impressive.

None of this will be much comfort to you. We may say your work is good, but you think it could, and should, be better. And that's okay, actually. Just, don't feel bad about yourself because your work isn't as good as you think it should be.

When I get compliments I don't think I deserve, I just say "thank you" and leave it at that. When I say "Oh, I'm not that good." people start encouraging me and giving me more compliments... it's kinda annoying.

>But in a more technical way, I still feel that I could use more advices.
There's two things you have to know about feedback.

First: it can only do you so much good. I can offer suggestions, talk about what problems there are, and explain lots of theory... after a certain point, you have to sit down and practice. Feedback can tell you what could be improved, and explain how to improve it, but it's up to you to actually buckle down and improve. Practice, study, experiment.

Second: I can only talk about what I see. Say you want to improve your skills with human anatomy... well, if you don't draw any humans, I can't comment on your ability to draw humans.

That second one is probably why you're getting so much positive feedback: you're sticking to small range of things you already know how to do, so everything you post looks good.

I'm asking you to trust me: post the stuff that looks like crap, and I can give you feedback on it.

Now, if there are things you want to be good at but you don't know where to start, I can give you suggestions on that. I'm not sure exactly what you want to improve, but from the discussion so far I'll make a few guesses. :3

>Lighting:
You use very soft, ambient lighting. All the shadows are very gentle. This works well with gentle emotions, such as Flutter in the first post, and these two: >>118289. Bolder light and shadow works well for strong emotions, and dramatic intensity

Chiaroscuro is the use of strong light and shadow in order to define the shape of something. This is pretty much the opposite of what you use, and if you want to expand your abilities, chiaroscuro is definitely worth looking up.

Here's the Wikipedia page for it (which may be available in your native language): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaroscuro

>Spelling and Grammar:
>In coming.
In this case, it's one word: "incoming."

>advices.
The plural for "advice" is just "advice:" it doesn't have an "s" on the end. For some stupid reason.

>English's
That should be "English dictionary." In this case, "English" is an adjective.

>something I try
>not totaly finish
These should be in the past tense: "tried" and "finished"

I totally Agree. And it's killing me when people use that as an excuse for not working. "But I suck ! I don't have any talent, there no use !". My dad is like that, and it's usually end with a lot of arguing... <<

>Second: I can only talk about what I see. Say you want to improve your skills with human anatomy... well, if you don't draw any humans, I can't comment on your ability to draw humans.

I usually draw more humans than ponies , except lately, but most of them aren't pony related, so I don't bother posting them here. And I know that drawing from real life is extremly important. But I can't even draw with a sibling near me, so, drawing outside? I simply can't. So I've started a daily routine. Well, not sure if it's revelant or not, but look at the picture I've just posted. It's not pony related so I wasn't sure I should post it. (And you need to love red)

>Here's the Wikipedia page for it (which may be available in your native language): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaroscuro

Yep, It's available in French. But you can try, the english page is way more revealing.

>Colour Theory
>Here's a great little tutorial on colour: http://purplekecleon.deviantart.com/art/How-I-See-Color-A-Tutorial-184642625

That's funny. Yesterday after my fiasco in color, I've decided to seriously learn how to work in color. And already read this tutorial 2 times. And will probably read it a lot more.

>Human Anatomy
>There's a book called Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm, it's a great little reference for drawing people.

I've already planned to buy books. Actually, it's going to be my Christmas gift but I will check this one ^^

>As before, I hope this helps some. English is a horribly messed up language, there's all kinds of fussy little details. :3

Yeah, I know. You see, I'm french (yep, sorry french haters, next time I will be more careful for chosing my born.) And French is soooo annoying for that... They are so many rules with so many exceptions...

And, for conclude, I just want to say "thanks".

A while back, I asked myself: "Ten years from now, what am I going wish I'd been doing for the past ten years?" Art and comics.

Then I started doing it. Haven't put down my pencil since. :3

I'm Canadian, so that's fine with me (I spoke French fairly well when I was in high school, actually, but I've gotten pretty rusty since then).

C'est intéressant de savoir que des personnes ont des notions de français, mais je suppose que je vais devoir continuer en anglais malgrés tout ^^

And for those who have asked me commission, I'm going to do them, no problem, but time are a bit short lately, for the first time in months, things happen to me IRL. (and a friend just buy me Dishonored. I can't fight against that.)

I like the concept and you can't get much more ambitious than that perspective. Only thing jumping out at me is the lighting. The most saturated area of grass isn't quite in line with the pony's (In my head I've named her Fern) cast shadow (which could stand a little more definition based on pony shape) and by my eyeballing the pig (in my head his name is Wilbur) would be casting a shadow that overlaps your pony...

But the important work (does it draw in the viewer?) appears to be done...

If an artist doesn't say they hate their art, they're either not taking it seriously, or are simply not talking about it. Personally, I go with the latter option.

The thing is, an artist who hates their work actually has strong self esteem. It means that they think they are, or ought be, more capable than their work shows them to be. If an artist had low self esteem, they'd just say "Yeah, this is all I'm good for."

An old adage goes, "hate what you write, but love to write." It goes for artists too. An artist who hates their work is trying to improve, and that's a process that never stops. That doesn't mean that they hate being an artist.

>> No. 119347

>this mean I can keep complaining about my art without feeling bad?
Well, you can, but I recommend against it for two reasons.

First, it puts people off. Many will react negatively toward it, such as >>119328. Self depreciation has a way of getting on people's nerves. Only a slim percentage of artists respond with sympathy, which usually results in encouragement and compliments... well meaning, but rarely encouraging or constructive.

Second, it's wasted energy. Rather than agonize over it, it's better to tackle it head on. If you don't like your art, identify what you don't like, and work on it.

I'm pretty sure the reason most artists put down their own work is out of humility. They don't want to seem arrogant, so they apologize and make disclaimers ("I'm really not that good, sorry..."). This isn't something to worry about, because people won't think you're arrogant unless you're outright bragging or blustering. If all you do is post something and say a few words, you're not going to make that impression.

Rather than talking about how much you don't like your work, talk about what you don't like. It lets you vent a little, and it'll give something for others to offer useful comments about.

When comments are directed at the art rather then the artist, it sounds much less self-depreciating.
For example:
-"I'm terrible with perspective."
Compared to:
-"The perspective in this is is terrible."

It helps to phrase things positively, too.
For example:
-"The perspective is terrible."
Compared to
-"The perspective in this could be better."

These are subtle things, but humans are all about subconscious reactions so little things can make a big difference in how people react.

There is a third reason not to complain. Any comments an artist makes will affect how people respond to the work. The less you say, the more honest and unspoiled the feedback is. Saying "Something is wrong with the hind leg of this character" will end up making everyone comment on that one particular thing, and that thing alone. If there's something else worth commenting on, it'll go unnoticed.

One of the main uses for feedback is to find out if something that bothers you is actually a problem. If nopony mentions something that sticks out like a sore thumb to you, it may not actually be as big a problem as it seems to be. By mentioning it, everyone notices it immediately, which contaminates their reactions.

>Quick question. How long it takes for someone to do something like this Rarity?
Don't worry about comparing yourself to others, it's a hard road in the wrong direction with a bad ending.

As for speed and time, that improves with practice. Focus on getting the level of quality you want first, regardless of how long it takes, and developing the techniques and methods required to get those results. Once you can create the kind of artwork you want, then focus on efficiency and speed.

Hotkeys. Hotkeys are your friend. If you can switch to a tool by with a keyboard shortcut, it'll take much less time than going over to a tool pallet. It saves you a mere fraction of a second, but when you switch between tools a few dozen times a minute, those split seconds add up.

Anyway. hope this helps some.

It's not that I want to compare, but it's just I want to do so many things each day, and not enough time. And since I don't really know how long this kind of stuff is supposed to take... It just a curiosity.

Practice? In what way, do you have any particular criticisms?

Well, the colors chosen are too flashy in my opinion, the lineart should have more variety in the thickness, I think the shades aren't strong enough (especially under the costume). The more something is away (near the horizon) the less the color is strong. (take a look at the pic)

Whitefox has posted a a very usefull guide for color from Purplekecleon : http://purplekecleon.deviantart.com/art/How-I-See-Color-A-Tutorial-184642625 Take a look, it's really helping me.

But you really start to understand those things with practice (things I terribly need to keep doing btw <<)

Just trying something different. I must say that I love this style. But I'm sure that I've already see someone else draw like that :/

I saw #Taking requests and #OCs, so I'm going to ask if you could draw Knit Knack here, sock-less and knitting.

Well, I've said somewhere in the thread that I wouldn't do more requests, at least for a moment. But I had not edited my first post. Now, it's done. But I must say that a find your OC very cute. So I will probably do it too. But I don't promise anything.

>>119558
I hate the idea of being stuck in one style, and not being able to do different thing. And I love trying new stuff. Plus, who doesn't like cute anthro?

(And, is there a way to correctly put the balise after an edit?)

I hope you like it. I tried to play a little bit with the light, but I'm not sure at all if it's working correctly. Maybe the spots of light aren't big enough, or not enough contrast. I don't know.

I need help for another thing right now. I have trouble with the stallions. I don't find a way to make stallion looking manly with my style without any artifice like facial hairs. And if they're manly enough, they lose all the cuteness justifying drawing in my style and not in the show style.

So basiquely, any suggestion with the exemple I've just done?

Here we go. Since you said it was him happy who was important, I figured that a simple portrait was good enough. I don't know if is happy enough in the picture, but i figured out that a happy face Pinkie style was too much. But I wonder if is not a bit seductive, now <<

Nice color sense. That works so well. I can't ever get this because I use Autodesk Pro, which is such a horsesh*t program. Do you use PS?

Ok. From now on I will start to do commissions. I'm not sure yet about the price, not as high as a pro of course, but I'm not sure yet. And should I start a new thread just for that?

I suddenly realized that I should upload this thread. At least to say thanks to the people of ponychan. Really helped me.

(the image was done for a friend, but is quite appropriate right now)
