Legends of Equestria Ponychan Mod

Thanks to tux3's valiant efforts at making a private server for Legends of Equestria, it is now possible to mod the game to a limited degree.
This thread will serve to keep track of a set of modifications for the game (new cutie marks, npcs, quests, items).

Want to help or just make your own NPCs & Cutie Marks?
Adding custom cutie marks:

Create a 256x256 png image of the Cutie Mark, leaving about 50px of margin on each side.
Save as cutie_[CMname], where [CMname] can be any name containing no spaces (but may contain underscores).
Save the file to [LoE]\data\data\cutiemarks\, where [LoE] is the folder containing the server files.

Open [LoE]\data\data\CutieMarks.xml in a text editor.
Add a new CutieMark entry inside of the <ArrayOfCutieMark> block, selecting a unique [CMid] number and [CMname]. [CMfile] will be the name of your file without its extension.

Adding NPCs:

Open LoE and connect to your local server.
Create a pony that will have the look and name of the NPC you want to create.
Walk to the location you want to place the NPC and face in the desired direction.
In the server window, type the commands:

setPeer
getPonyData
getPos
getRotation

Write down the output from all three get commands.

Create a new npc file (plain text file) or copy an existing npc file to modify. It should look something like:

name [NPC name]
scene [NPC location]
pos [the three numbers from the output of getPos, separated by spaces]
rot [the four numbers from the output of getRotation, separated by spaces]
ponyData [the alphanumeric string from the output of getPonyData]

# Quest metadata
questId [unique quest number]
questName Speak to [NPC name]
questDescr [Some description]

# Main quest commands
say ...
answer end ...

label end
end



[NPC location] must be a location name from the following list:

PonyVille
SugarCubeCorner
GemMines
Appaloosa
SweetAppleAcres
Everfree1
Zecoras
Everfree3
Tartarus
RaritysBoutique
Canterlot
Cottage
Cloudsdale
Ponyville Library 1st floor
Ponyville Library 2nd floor


[unique quest number] must be a quest number not used by any other npc.

Once done, save the file to [LoE]\data\npcs\. The filename should start with the quest Id, followed by the NPC name, all without spaces.
[LoE] is the folder containing the server files.

You can check the names of the files in the \npcs\ folder. The first part of the filename is the quest number, so that gives a quick idea which numbers are in use.

An NPC in Canterlot. I think she's a recreation of an official LoE NPC, because she actually has a speech image. She was part of the server files like Donut Steel.

I'm having problems getting LoE to reconise the new cutie mark.

Can you send me a new CutieMarks.xml? I tried editing it or it's broken or uneditable.

I can't select it on the Talent Mark selector. I can select the Elements of Harmony, Lyre and our OC cutie marks but not Trixies.

And I'm positive I put cutie_trixie.png in the right folder.

You'll get the hang of it eventually. As long as you put the entry in the server folder's \data\data\CutieMarks.xml, it should show up as selectable even if the image isn't there.

She still gets confused with some of her lines, I'll sort it out. Rather a serious problem actually given not even using the menu to unstuck yourself helps.

Let me know if you want 07Trixie for Ponychan server. I have a questline of sorts planned for her but given Snips and Snails are not present for, she is merely dissapointed.

"Have" or "has", feel free to correct my errors. Keep in mind talking to Trixie will of course result you to get stuck, but going to settings and "back to game" once won't cut it. You have to do it 4 times. Wish we could figure out how to avoid that bug.

I've updated the mod pack and put the new link in the OP.

I didn't have much issue when talking with Trixie.

Took quick look around Ponychan server, I'm all alone! But not even new NPCs are there.

Also, can we relocate Trixie? I'm thinking perhaps she was better off infront of the fountain where players will first meet her.

Should be free for a year.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I'm understanding the pricing model of this thing for later use. Anyway, I've read a ton of documentation and set up a windows 2008 R2 micro instance (setting the proper ports open, I hope). Just waiting until I can connect to it.

As I understand it, it's free as long as you keep below those limits set up in the documentation. So you might have to keep an eye on it, if you get it up, so it doesn't end up costing a lot of money all of a sudden.

I'll be checking the billing status to make sure it stays at 0 as it is now.

So far I have a running instance and set up the server stuff, and it seems to be running fine.
The problem now is that the server seems to be ignoring all incoming traffic except the remote desktop, so I can't connect to it with LoE...
The security group has all the right ports enabled, so I don't know what the problem is...

Well, enabling ICMP worked, so I know the security group stuff has an effect. Enabling all UDP/TCP did squat, so it's not a problem with the port.
I think I'm going to have to telnet this to figure out what's going on.

Windows Firewall was the culprit. It was blocking the private server on the ports, so it wasn't actually listening.

Estimating possible commands in NPC programming like "addquest", alas no luck.

The quest commands are in a text file on the repository. I don't know of any that are implemented beyond those I used. The code for goto is there but from my tests it didn't work right.

QuestScript.txt:

=> Since I'm a pony, I'll make my own NPC script and interpreter :
==> Filenames should be XXName where XX is id of the quest. Not mandatory.
==> Have a quest struct wich remembers qstringlist of commands, quest id/name/descr/state and EIP
==> EIP should be reset everytime you start a new conversation with a NPC. Don't resume from the last time.

One command per line, arguments separated by spaces
Commands :
say msg : NPC says message msg
sayName name : The message will be said by this NPC.
sayIcon iconId : The message will have this icon
answer dest msg : Answer for previous message, goto label dest if selected
goto label : Jumps to the label
label name : Creates a label you can jump to. No spaces allowed in the label name.
give item qty : Give qty items. Can be <0.
giveBits qty : Give qty bits. Can be <0.
hasItem item qty yes no : Jump to yes or no if player has qty of item
setQuestState state : set the quest state, will be saved on the savegame
setQuestState state id : set the state of quest id, will be saved on the savegame
jumpIfState state dest : Jumps to dest if quest state is state
hasBits qty yes no : Jumps to yes or no if player has qty bits
questName name : Name of the quest.
questId id : Should be unique. Used in the savegame and by other quests/npcs.
questDescr txt : Description of the quest.
teleport x y z : Teleport at given pos
teleport x y z rx ry rz rw : Teleport at given pos/rot
teleport x y z scene : Teleport on scene at given pos
name txt : Name of the NPC
ponyData data : PonyData of the NPC in base64. Use getPonyData to get it.
scene txt : Scene where the NPC is
pos x y z : Pos of the NPC
rot rx ry rz rw : Rot of the NPC
wear itemId : Add an item to be worn by the NPC
teleport x y z rx ry rz rw scene : Teleport on scene at given pos/rot
end : end of conversation

Each player has a copy of the Quest class.
An answer should always be following a say or another answer.
When reaching a say, we send the say and all the answers under it, then wait until the client answers.
If a say has no answers, we still send it and wait until the client clicks to continue.

I have no idea. As far as I know it's just a number.
The quest class defines state as:
quint16 state; // State (progress) of the quest.


The way I would use it is to a)
set a number that means the quest text has already been read by the player and
b) enable/unlock another quest

All that said, I found no place in the code where the quest state is accessed. I suspect it's either not implemented yet, or implemented somewhere hidden. I haven't actually tried to use those commands.

I think if a command is not implemented, it shows up on the server window saying something like "Unknown command".

I guess I'll experiment more with Trixie on my Local server and see what I can come up with. I can make Snips and Snails but don't wanna give them to you until I can make quest lines.

Unless you want them anyway. They won't look like there cartoon apperance for obvious reasons.

Sorry, that's a bug in the server's code. I'll try to fix it.

Basically you can't make a real quest yet. Just NPCs that talk.

It's just a number you can use to remember where you are in a quest.
e.g. you could say for example if questState is 0, you haven't done the quest and the NPC can give it to you, but if questState is 1, you've already done the quest and the NPC just says a generic reply.
It doesn't work yet, but hopefully I'll had it in the next version.

Pretty much what I figured. What does sayIcon do exactly? I didn't notice much of a change when testing it.

In theory it's possible to add your own sprites to the game, but it's really not easy. They are embedded in the game files.

Ah I think I understamd In LoE Beta Weekend I recall a mission in which the state is always set to 0 so you can do it over and just sell the medical supplies.

I would really appreciate it if you can make it possible to set missions, such as talking to specific ponies, delivering specific items etc.

One idea for a quest uses the rabbit models from LoE Beta. Fluttershy asks you to find all her lost bunnies hidden throughout Ponyville.

Perhaps also able to set identidy pictures like with Flan's dialogue. I'm always concerned that nopony will reconise Snips and Snails well without it.

Right, I think I see now. So it wouldn't do anything to NPCs without sprites.

That's what I figured. I'm still confused that cutie marks aren't managed the same way, but I'll count my blessings since it makes modding easier.
If only it did the same kind of image dumping for npc sprites...

Need to restart server to fix Apple Mount but Granny Smith's alright. The reason why she's backed up into the house is to hide her tail making it look more like a bun. That and I can imagine Granny Smith the kind of lady who likes taking it easy in her rocking chair outside. But since she can't find her chair, have to stand.

I have almost finish my little character update.
I will just play test to see I got everypony. But still DPDP I would appreciate it if you can check over and resave all the cutie marks I added in (Even Trixies which I renewed) before updating the Ponychan server. Mrs. Cakes cutie mark is worst off.

One thing I noticed is that there was a typo in Surprise's name, so I fixed it in the NPC file and cutie marks, but I can't change the pony's name myself. I would need to have a ponydata with the fixed name.

I was getting tired of manually fixing things to get rid of that Login bug where it stops at "Item Atlas .. Done", so I made a batch file (called start.bat) in the LoE folder. So far it's worked 100%.

If you want to use it, just have to replace C: with your main drive, and [youruser] with your windows username. I had listed all of the planned NPC commands earlier. There's been no change on that front so far. All that's possible right now is speaking.

It's a bit more nuanced. The game sends messages and expects responses from the server it's connected to, in order to work. What the private server does is listen to those messages, decode their meaning, and then send back an appropriate response that the client will understand and apply.

Ideas for stories (Which are made from a series of various quests)

After doing royal favours for Twilight and her friends, she recieves a letter asking to see you, in which you travel around Equestria doing missions against the rising darkness from various villains, all leading to Tirek.

Another story in mind is you find a secret door in the royal wing of Starswirl the Bearded. The spirit (Or to be precise, the projection) of Starswirl himself appears and say you need three paradox keys to enter. These keys are held by Dr. Hooves, Colgate and Time Flies. Once all the keys are gathered, Starswirl the Bearded himself is able to summon you to the Preclassical era in order to help the seperate pony tribes against the windigoes.

Of course I need to find out if it's possible for me to make additional content in Unity. I don't really wanna bother unless I sure I can't. But would love to make places like Whitetail Woods, Manehatten, Olde Ponylands etc.
A beautiful idea for a feature for the later adventure would be something like "Reputation" from WoW where Preclassical ponies respond do you depending on what type of pony you are or how much quest you did for you.
(For example if you play as an Earth Pony and meet a Unicorn in preclassical era, they might call you "Mud Pony" or "Peasent type" due to it being socially OK back then).

I'm a big dreamer of course.

Well, it's mostly that I would like for more of the background ponies we're missing to be made first to fill out Ponyville/Canterlot/Cloudsdale. Putting some cultists around the claw thing isn't a bad idea though.
Off the top of my head we're missing Colgate/Minuette, two of the flower trio, the spa ponies, bonbon/sweetie drops, noteworthy/blues, and a lot more.
I guess I could set some time to handle making those though.

It seems the private server has been updated! It should now be possible to get quests rolling.

New changes:
* Unicorns can now teleport correctly.
* The inventory now works completely and is persistent (including wearables).
* Update the QuestScript, it's now possible to create real quests with rewards.
* Add new NPCs, and the start of "Intensive Carrot Unit" (Astral Charm's quest).

I haven't had the time to install the new update yet and check out the commands. I'll try to make a more comprehensive How-To after I've played around with it, but you could try experimenting to get an idea how it works.

Here is the list of commands and variables from QuestScript.txt

Commands :
say msg : NPC says message msg
sayName name : The message will be said by this NPC.
sayIcon emotionId : The message will use the avatar/icon for this emotion if it exists.
answer dest msg : Answer for previous message, goto label dest if selected
goto label : Jumps to the label
label name : Creates a label you can jump to. No spaces allowed in the label name.
give itemId qty : Give qty items with this itemId. Can be <0 to take items from the player.

I've been pondering whether/how to set it up so they'll remember which answers you gave on their initial welcoming speech.
On the one hand, it would be kind of neat that they'd remember the personality you showed them at first, and continued to tailor the responses in kind. On the other, that does mean rewriting every subsequent speech multiple times with variations.

If you manage to give each the mane six quests to give, I can pretty much follow what you've written for them in there coding for me to make my own quests for NPCs as well as expand on what you've started such as once all six quests are finished, Twilight will reccomend you to see the Princesses.

For the practice test I have in mind for Trixie, she asks the player to go see Snips and Snails who each have one of her items she request. I think I planned Snips to have her hat and Snails to have her cloak.

If possible, if Twilights friends won't have missions until after speaking to Twilight, maybe it would be possible for Twilight to with-hold a mission to talk to Princess Celestia until after satisfying all her friends requests.

Also, since I got the freebie version of Unity, I wonder if it be possible to make custom locations with it, like Whitetail Woods?

It seems that cutie marks are now included directly in the server files and downloaded by the client.
It should be possible to retool the mod pack so that it's no longer necessary to install the cutie marks manually, making things much simpler.

Hmmm... I guess we can just remove them. But I would change our Quest IDs to something that doesn't conflict with them.
Maybe start at the 200+ range or something along those lines.

Since the logs are still on the local private server, the players will still have to get the mod pack to see the custom cutie marks & items.

Updated the mod pack for the new version of the server.
It's no longer necessary to copy files to the AppData folder manually, so those instructions have been removed from OP and the installation instructions. I've also removed the link for the old client.
The Ponychan server has been updated to remove the default NPCs and re-add the mod NPCs.
The mod NPCs have been updated to use quest IDs in the 300+ range so they can work alongside the default NPCs, if desired.

I will be working on a simple quest for one of the existing NPCs shortly. I will attempt to create a custom item for it to see how well these can be integrated in the mod pack.

Updated the mod pack and server.

The first official quest has been added. It's started by talking with Pinkie Pie (after the introductory speech).
There was also a new item modded in for the quest. The Green Apple (id 0) has successfully been replaced with Honey, so putting in new items (non-wearable) should be possible from now on.

I did give Pinkie a quest. Technically, it involves Pinkie, Big Mac, Derpy and Joe. They should all be in the pack and server.

Here is the quest script outline I used to figure out who sets what state. It was helpful because both Derpy and Pinkie had intro scripts, so I had to be able to track two sets of states at once.

Looking through the commit comments, it seems there was an issue with Windows using a port the game needed for login. That might be related to the issue you were having.
The port will be changed in the next release to correct that issue. Judging by all of the commits lately, there might be a new version soon. If not, I could try my hand at compiling a dev build.

This fixes a lot of bugs and "officially" add features every server already had since forever ago (because they compiled themselves!).
