#Reviewer (This review thread is to replace the old one since I've picked up a new partner in crime reviewing.)Soundslikeponies(Finn):I've done one or two reviews on here under different aliases, but I mostly privately reviewed things upon request. I don't usually tear down writers, but if it's clear to me that what you wrote you wrote purely for the reason of screwing with your reader, I may not remain sympathetic. What I know is drama, dialogue, and how to sell your story. I can help with your word choice, syntax, and help you effectively manage your words so you don't find yourself writing long-winded explanations of something simple. You can find me on fimfiction here: http://www.fimfiction.net/user/soundslikeponiesIf your writing style is below a certain threshold, or I find your story particularly unengaging, I will give a concise review in the thread why, otherwise I will comment your gdocs, or at least comment them up until they become disengaging. Also, I don't take meta, I don't take trollfics, and I'm probably not going to like your human fics.Garnot(Jake):I’m somewhat of a silent veteran. I’ve been around the fandom since its inception, but didn’t become involved in the writing scene till midway through season one. Since then, I have seen and read plenty of stories to know what works and what doesn’t, so my knowledge of the written work is fairly high.…Read more >>

#Grimdark A war is upon Equestrea Twilight leads the changling army to Canterlot. But let’s go back to the beginning of this week. Our story starts at Rarity’s house. Spike and Rarity are getting ready for diamond hunting as soon as they walk out the door twilight calls for spike she says its important spike looks at rarity she says “don’t be too long” spike knotted his head in response and ran over to the towering tree which was his home ever sense twilight hatched him, but it had never occurred to him how long he’s lived here and never seen his parents. All he knew was he lived with twilight and that’s all that mattered. At least that’s what he tried to convince himself. Once he arrived at the door he came in. he saw books on historic pony war he thought that he was going to write a letter to princes Celestia asking a question, but instead of that she gave him a letter wrapped in a velvet red bow and that glisten even though the light in the room was dim, she said sent this but instead of saying it intusiasticly like normal she said it in a low deep voice as she looked away as if ashamed of something. Suspicious of twilight’s actions he sent it anyway with no question and went back to rarity and they were off on the way spike kept thinking she would freak out over the dirt .once they got there rarity said “let’s get started” and so they did. A few hours later they were about to leave then rarity said there’s one right there. So he dug it up but this one was different he couldn’t put his claw on it seemed to have a glow to it concentering the low light. Rarity said, “Let’s show this to twilight she might know what it is.” Rarity trotted as fast as she could. Once they got to twilight’s house spike knocked and rarity said, “twilight come here, twilight. Where is she.” Spike shrugged and opened the door. The door creaked open books were scattered everywhere. Twilight didn’t seem to be here. Spike ran upstairs up to twilight’s bed there was a note that said,” come to sugar cube corner.” Spike started down the stairs and saw rarity was gone. He was all alone shaking. “To sugar cube corner” spike s…Read more >>
It's hard to read when it's all in one giant block of text like that. You might consider using some sort of paragraph structure, it would definitely make people a lot more willing to read your story.Largely due to that, I fear this thread won't receive a very warm welcome on this board. If you have the time, I suggest reading the sticky here >>112263For example, I'm not entirely sure what you are looking for here, but if you want a review, you might consider posting in a review thread. It contains a lot of helpful info, and would really help you showcase your story in a more effective manner.Anyway, welcome to Ponychan /fic/! I hope you both enjoy and learn from your time here, and may the reviewers have mercy.
Hi there, Lyra Highstrings. Welcome to /fic/. As Crimmy here has already pointed out, wall o' text fics are kind of a turn off. >btw hi, crimmy.Anyway, around here we love more than anything to help you with your story, but it's kind of exhausting to read it when it's like that, because you have to constantly recheck to make sure you didn't skip a line, and they all just blend together eventually. A good rule of thumb is six lines of text. That said, we don't exactly know what it is you want. We have a few reviewers lying around if you're looking for help on improving your story. Stop by and say hi, and be sure to place your story in a google document first. Trust me, it will make everypony's time here infinitely easier. If you're looking to showcase your story, I recommend making an author thread, and telling us a little about yourself. Ultimately, read The /fic/ Guide, currently the second thread down from the top. It has lots of important information that you may find useful to your stay here, and don't be afraid to click on any of the links, either.Other than that, have fun, and enjoy your stay in /fic/.
Your reward for this thread shall be bees.Bees in your hair.Bees up your nose.Bees on your eyes.Bees.Bees everywhere. And these bees are really, really, angry.
#Contest #Presidential Nixon here with a project that's confidential. I'm not going to tell you anything about it. Yep, my lips are sealed. Like those glorified tusk-less walruses at the zoo. Seal-ed. So, don't expect to find out anything from me because I will defend this secret with my life. All right! Sheesh! I'll tell you. Just stop bothering me.It's a contest, and you are invited by me, the (former) President of the United States of America, to judge the entries alongside me. Of course, you can't all be judges, so I made up this little contest to find three of you who are ready to judge with one of the most influential men in history. To prove your worth, you must describe in three sentences (or less) why you would be a better judge than anyone else on the board. Your posting name must be XXX or "Anonymous," and the subject must be "Entry." You will be scored according to my apple ranking system that I use on "The Presidential Review Thread" (You will lose 1.000 point per error). Entries will be accepted no later than May 19. Winners will be announced on this thread on May 20. More information on the contest will be given to the three winners via email. You may enter more than once, but you may also correct yourself up until May 19 by responding to your original post. The subject of all correction posts should be "Correction" followed by the date the correction was made. Entries cannot have pictures accompanying them. All entries containing an image will be disregarded.Yes! Of course I'll still review your story on my thread while this is going on.May the force be with you all.…Read more >>

#Discussion #Crossover #Sci-fi #Shipping So what's /fic/'s favorite looooong fic? Mine has got to be One Way- It's longer than most harry potters and it's not even done yet. Not to mention that it's a Doctor who crossover and the Doctor isn't even the protagonist. It doesn't really show much of the Mane Six, it's more focused on the Princesses and the Guards. So what's /fic/'s favorite long fic?
Hi... why no link? No, seriously, the lack of a link makes this thread be kind of difficult to maneuver because no one will know what story the other is talking about, trapped in a cycle of isolated shouting of ones own preference, lost to a sea of entropy as the ultimate fate of the universe unwinds and kills whatever remnant of sapiency remains. And my favorite long fic is It's Dangerous Business, Going out Your Door.http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/04/its-dangerous-business-going-out-your.html
#Single fic #Adventure #Interactive Trying something... different. I hope this pans out.I look in the window to see the diamond necklace hanging around my neck. It glints wonderfully in the candlelight, though the glint is all I can really see in my reflection—everything else in the window is just the passing forest and the evening sky. I smile, but it quickly fades. Sixteen thousand bits for a little shiny rock inset into another sixteen thousand bit gold necklace. Together, that's well over what I make in a year. I don't get why ponies would want these more than simply because of their shine, but it's because of that want that I can still put food on my plate.A porter knocks on the wooden door to my room. "Ms. Bijou," he says, muffled by the door. "Mr. Brilliant Cut would like to see you in the dining car in thirty minutes.""Okay," I reply, and the porter leaves to knock on the next door to give the message to the rest of the company. My boss probably wants to talk to us about proper ways to greet customers to, as he says, "maximize selling potential" on this trip yet again.I leave the cabin, move through the luggage car, and exit out onto observation deck for some fresh air. Another salespony bumps into me on the way out. "Mr. Cut won't he happy to see you with that, you know," she jeers. We stand on the deck eye to eye in silence for an instant before she adds, "Actually, he probably will, knowing him." She leaves.I'm alone on the deck now. It's cool out here, but I can't see a thing. There only light is from the train, and everything else is a green-black passing blur. Pawing at the diamond necklace, I worry about my future. At this rate, the pony just then will probably be promoted over me—
Well, at least the room is slightly brighter now.
So, to recap: My name is Bijou, and I sell diamonds for a living. Last night, when my company went on a business trip, my car on the train got separated from everypony else. I then got attacked by a monster—a big black blob of eyes—I don't even know—which left when a bell rang from inside the town. When I tried running away down the tracks, I somehow circled around to the same spot, so I had to choose between a path leading deeper into the forest or down to town. The town appears to be called Ashdale, and it also appears to have been completely deserted for the last hundred years. I stayed in a house near the forest last night. This morning, I went out deeper into the town, and the first (and only other) building I went into is the restaurant I'm currently inside. It's dark, and I think somepony may have died in here. There's a giant probably-hundred-year-old blood splatter on the floor.I have with me a flashlight, a hoof-held mirror, a heart-shaped key that's also a magnifying glass, a diamond necklace from my business trip (though it isn't really mine), a letter from an old resident of the house I stayed in last night, and the pillowcase I'm holding it all in.I'm cold, hungry, and scared, and I need to find a way home. ♦Well, it's certainly been a while.
Go upstairs.
#Single fic #Drama One of the things that got me into the fandom was a buddy of mine telling me about Tyrant Celestia and Trollestia as alternate interpretations. I thought that was hilarious and I still do. I also think that all the fanwork depicting battles between Nightmare Moon and Celestia is really awesome. So, basically, the NLR has ruined everything with how much they suck. They're not THAT ubiquitous, but they plague Youtube comments constantly, and they put the occasional shitty fic on on Fimfic.I want to write about their idea in a way that isn’t bullshit. Among other things, there is no New Lunar Republic--this will be a “banishment of Nightmare Moon” fic as much as it is anything else.I don’t see any rule saying I can’t make threads that tell stories rather than discussing them or linking to them, so I’m going to write short things in here along the Nightmare Moon theme and y’all can hide the thread if you don’t like it, or comment if you do like it, or write stuff yourself if the idea tickles you.
>>124966A key thing here is that I am pointedly not writing Tyrant Celestia. This is the story of Nightmare Moon, played straight, it's just that the myth calls NMM jealous and leaves out the fact that what she did was largely out of loyalty to "her people."Hope that comes out in the other snippets I put here.
>>124954As with many stories, it is not so simple to name a moment that could be called the Beginning. Did the story begin with the first blood spilled in my name? Shall I discuss the very first treasonous whispers that seeded the idea of the Lunar Republic? Or was it the moment when I first assumed the name of Nightmare? These things may well have been key moments for the Republic, but for me, the story began on a chilly October night, not long after I left the castle. I was standing on a rooftop in the heart of Canterlot. In the distance, I could see the castle's balcony jutting out over the city. Only a few nights ago, I would have been standing there to welcome the night, making my presence known to the citizens.Princess Celestia's coat and mane glinted brilliantly against the night. Even across the several miles separating us, her eyes found mine as if we were standing face to face.It was years after the founding of the Republic, and whispers of Rebellion had already begun--but it was on that cold October night, when my eyes met my sister's from across the distance between castle and city, that I knew things had changed.
>>124966... although yes, I do think that having a morally ambiguous, authoritative Celestia. One of my early amusing headcanons was that she uses Twilight and her friendship letters to keep control over the Elements.I'll be bringing all the little snippets I've already done for this into this thread once I get around to it, and a few more are floating around scribbled on napkins and .txt files.
#Author #Discussion #NANOWRIMO Hey AllI didn't see another thread for this so I thought I would make one! October is almost over and November is almost among us. And with November come NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth or NANOWRIMO. I was wondering if anyone else was considering participating in it this year? I have been considering doing as pony related story for it myself and finish or don't finish, posting it probably on my FiMfic page. For those of you who don't know about it info can be found here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/The tl;dr version of the site is this: NANOWRIMO is a challenge that happens every year that challenges writers to write a 50,000 word book between Nov 1 and 30th. It doesn't need to be polished, heck, it doesn't even need to make sense, just needs to be somewhat coherent and 50,000 words long. If you manage to complete it then you submit it to the website for approval. The approval process is little more than a word count check and a quick look to ensure that it's not just the same sentence/paragraph posted over and over again. If you are approved they give you a certificate and a little web badge saying you did it.I think it's a fun writer's challenge that I try and participate in when I can (and usually have broken hands by the end of). Win or lose you still win for trying! I think it would be awesome to have a thread here with other writers who are participating and see how everyone is doing and encourage each other. Your thoughts /fic/?…Read more >>
My fellow Brony NaNos, we are in the last seven days of our month long stress induced hell journey. How have you fared? Are you still with us even? I know I am well behind the mark, but I am pressing forward to just try and finish my story, even if I don't reach the 50,000 word mark. I hope that the rest of you will follow me in this adventure and in the end, win or lose, you'll have tried until the end, and can look back fondly on what you did accomplish!I would write more inspirational words here for you all, but I have to get to work now if I have a chance to finish.>mfw I have to do 3000 words/day to get close to finishing.
This is it my Brony NaNos, the final day! How did you do? Are you going to make it? Have you given up all hope? Are you not going to make it but are still going to push forward regardless?I personally am not going to make it. Short of me having inspiration enough to make a heroic push today My word count will probably only climb a couple thousand words today at best, and I'll still be way off. Regardless this will have been a fun journey for me, and I know I will take things away that i can use in the future. For those of you still pressing on, good luck and may your words flow freely to your keyboard.>mfw what I've been doing all week rather than write :(
Well, it's official, NaNoWriMo 2012 is over! How did you all do? Did any of you win this year? Are you taking anything away from the experience? Anything you would like to say now that its all said and done?I know I fell far short, but I am taking away some good lessons. I wont feel so bad when i take writing breaks from now on otherwise I know I'll just burn myself out on the story. I pushed myself in directions I had never gone before in this story, and I now see the challenges with dealing with multiple characters on a level I had never done before, and just how hard it can be to juggle them. plus lots of other small things here and there. All said and done however I now see just how productive I can be when I put my mind to it. I came in with lofty ambitions, and was shown just what it takes.Congratulations to all of you who participated, win or lose! I hope you all had fun this year, and I hope to see many of you again next year, and maybe even some new faces!Final word count: 31410
#Author#Crossover Hey /fic/. This story of mine... Well Isn't much and I Personally think it's quite silly. >>125095Hey there, Flare. Nice cover art. Did you draw it yourself? As you may have gathered already, we aren't a reader base. I see you've already got your story on Fimfiction. That's a good start. /fic/ can help you improve your story if you'd like, but we aren't really the best place to showcase it. Thanks for stopping by, though. We love to see new faces around here. We don't get them very often.
>>125103>so who are you and why should we care to look at your story, exactly?Don't worry, it's not hostile, just rhetoric. It's meant to give you a chance to, er, promote yourself. Just to clear that up.
>>125105Yes Indeed I did Draw the Cover art and thanks for the tips I didn't know much before posting... sorry
#Discussion #Sad #Shipping For the first discussion thread I'll be making under /fic/'s new rule, I'd like to direct your attention to a little-known work (about novella length) written for NaPoNoWriMo.If a Pony Catch a Pony[Romance] [Sad]by Timebaby"After failing most of her classes at Canterlot College, Octavia returns to Manehatten for Hearth's Warming break. Over a weekend of drinking, debauchery and moping, she struggles with her desire to drop out of school and return to the comfort of old friends and romances. That is, if she can keep from alienating all of them."http://www.fimfiction.net/story/48524/If-a-Pony-Catch-a-PonyIt's an homage to JD Salinger's infamous Catcher in the Rye and apparently follows the plot of that closely (at least at first). Having not read very much of Catcher, I'm unable to comment about whether this fic works as a standalone story or is closer to a copy-paste crossover (although the first chapter or two certainly follow the beginning of the book quite closely), but from my perspective, it was an interesting, well-written story – a rare example of a fic that's told in a rambling, digression-filled style and actually engagingly so.…Read more >>

>>124301>I like to imagine a great deal of us, whether religious or not, are more accepting than you might give us credit for.I should have realized right away that a community of writers would be the most accepting of uncomfortable ideas. I found your post very interesting, especially since the entire theme of my story was "questions can be more important than answers.">Satan's possible "humanity" and making him appear actually sympathetic as a characterActually, I don't think the biblical serpent was ever explicitly identified as "the devil." It was the wisest animal in the garden, and a trickster and/or liar, but otherwise a perfectly ordinary animal (although, as Zaraturvara states, "the devil" is a symbol that encompasses several related ideas). And besides, completely unsympathetic and irredeemable people may exist in the real world but they make terrible characters in works of fiction.>It was thought-provoking without delving religion-bashing or anything but what felt an interesting exploration of the true question of good vs. evil. One of my goals was to write a story that both a religious person and an atheist could digest without too much eye-rolling. I'm not so sure a request of this nature is allowed, but I'm really desperate to find this fic again...I am looking for the fic titled, "When We Were Young" by lordtetanus. It was a clopfic (yeah, I know >.<) I read last year involving Spitfire and Sheriff Silverstar, and I am very interested in rereading it. Unfortunately, the Google Doc link on both heroku and an old FiMchan clopfic thread has been deleted, and any instance of lordtetanus's online presence seems to have been wiped. Google has turned up nothing, and so now I come here. Would anyone happened to have saved this fic, or is it lost forever? I'd be forever grateful if anyone could supply me with a copy!If it helps, the author also wrote under the alias, "Stinger-VXR42".

#Discussion In this thread we, the users of /fic/, shall discuss the possibility of moving from Ponychan to MLPchan.Obviously, this represents a radical shift for the board on a level not felt since the introduction of the sticky. While a move was proposed some three months back, MLPchan was still in its infancy and had yet to achieve the level of functionality that Ponychan offered, leading to the decision that /fic/ would remain on Ponychan for the time being. MLPchan has both delivered on its promised upgrades and made several additional features, which will be expanded upon shortly. In addition to this, Demetrius’ Gummii project appeared to be on the horizon, leaving the userbase with the dilemma of moving, only to possibly change its base of operations again in a short time. Demetrius has stated that the Gummii project will not be ready for quite some time, meaning that a second move will not be occurring in the immediate future. In light of these recent events, the topic of moving to MLPchan has been re-opened.A list of pros and cons has been compiled here:https://docs.google.com/document/d/15ASkfzGuqg_Vhko1Opj7rHiZH6Do4EUZ2W2x3Avq-kI/editIt is open to public commenting, so feel free to leave questions or concerns about any of the items listed in it. However, please keep things civil and factual; should it devolve into a mud-slinging fest the removal of comments and/or the privilege to comment may be considered. The document is maintained by Demetri Morgan, Seattle_Lite and Ion-Sturm and is mediated by Samurai Anon. The following is a list of commonly asked questions in regards to the potential move, which will be answered as concisely as possible. More detailed explanations can be found in the Pros and Cons document. I apologize for dredging this thread back up after it almost found peace in the gloom of /fic/’s ancient wastelands. There is still a shred of life left in it, though, and I don’t know where else to put this particular announcement. Not all of you check /meta/, so I’ve come here to link to >>/meta/132217 and >>/meta/132241 The long and short of it is that I’m taking a survey to see what the /fic/ community thinks of syndication. As syndication would affect all users who use /fic/ on either site, all a/fic/ionados are welcome (and encouraged) to take it. The survey can be found at http://derpy.me/DTuGP and the results at http://derpy.me/KsA-Q Thank you all for your time.
>>124814Will say what I said there: /fic/ is clearly trying to become part wholesale of MLPchan and trying to cling to them for whatever sake seems dumb.Instead, I say focus on making /all/ better so it can actually benefit people in Ponychan and forget this whole dreary business/people.Can't say I have too much of a duck to cook here, but maybe this will make it more noticeable to the mods.
>>124814Though I am once again an active member of /fic/, I am still regaining my hooves and am yet unable to provide a proper evaluation of 'syndication vs. not'. I will return in a few days with an answer if I can.
#Discussion This thread will be a discussion about interesting fics that anyone has read. We will try to see what makes a fic truly interesting, explore our own interesting concepts, and compare them along the way. Hopefully by the end of it all we will all be more interesing fic writers.Make sure you post the link to the story and give a short, simple summary of why it was interesting. My personal favorite is http://www.fimfiction.net/story/62059/1/Innie/Innie It's a brilliant idea. It explores the concept of unicorn horns not just being pointed outwards, but inwards as well. Now your turn. Let's see what interesting fics we can explore.
Story Recommendation General already does this.
>>124752 Hey yeah, since there's a 'Recommended Features' option, let's not go with the spirit of the post and try to share a story that we personally find interesting. Let's just imply OP's a dummy with nothing to contribute, and toss up a condescending remark to him. That's what makes for fun times right?OP: I recently read a spooky story about Twilight finding her own dead body in an empty room of the Canterlot Library. Hadn't seen that particular type of horror done before, and the author had a good grasp of toying with the unknown while leaving things open ended. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/57877/Body-of-Work
