In an attempt to give lesser known stories more attention, I thought we could start a /fic/ Book Club. Each week, we'll pick a Friendship is Magic fanfiction to read and discuss here.

>The Writing on the Wall
Synopsis: Daring Do can't believe her luck when she is asked to help explore the most ancient tomb known to ponykind. But terrible danger awaits her, for beneath the earth rests something beyond equine understanding.

>Moments Worth Sharing
Synopsis: After a very stressful day visiting her prized student in Ponyville, Princess Celestia is left alone to contemplate and watch the sunset. From an outsider's perspective, she has everything she could ever want. But has she ever really had anything at all?

Synopsis: Twilight decides to go out for a friendly night of drinking with her two friends, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, to relieve the stress of planning her brother's wedding and defending Canterlot against the changeling invasion, but not all is as it seems.

A letter arrives in the middle of the night, informing the unicorn that one of her two friends has been replaced by a changeling.

>The Ship-off
Synopsis: What makes a good story? Is it delicate prose and captivating description, as Twilight Sparkle claims, or is it non-stop action and entertainment, as Rainbow Dash has been arguing? With a stalemate between them, they decide there's only one way to settle this once and for all - a write-off!
The prompt? "Romance".

If you would like to nominate another story to start with, here are some guidelines.
>Nothing that breaks Ponychan’s posting rules.
>Completed works only.
>It must have less than 10k views.
>No crossovers (Daring Do and Doctor Whooves don’t count.)
>Ideally it should take less than a week to read the whole thing.

I won't add a nominee now as I'm more interested in seeing new to me works.

So based on synopsis my vote for first read goes to Right.

I suggest live readings. It gives a set time for everyone to sit down and join in. Then afterwards you can know everyone's read the story, and everyone's going to be there to discuss it.

Not to mention, live readings can be pretty fun. I think it'd give the event that extra bit to making participation enticing.

I wouldn't mind a /fic/ book club. I rarely read fanfiction, and what I do read is mostly on recommendation from people I know.

The only problem I see with that, is it would require organizing people to meet at a certain time, which would not only be headache inducing, but also just not work out due to differing schedules.

I like the idea of discussing the fic in a thread, but I think we'd have to have a set date for discussion, and any discussion prior to that is either not allowed, or has to be spoiler tagged. (Preferably the former.)

Also, I'd like to cast my vote at 'The Writing on the Wall'
>> No. 117447
I'd suggest Sunday 00:00 UTC.

That's midnight (or 1am) for Brits, Sat 5–8pm for Americans, and ~10am for Australians and East Asians.

I favor this over a live reading, both because of scheduling and because I have the technological skills of a deceased walrus.
>> No. 117484
The only problem with that for me is that I couldn't be there since it'd be 3 am, so my vote goes to discussing "moments worth sharing" in-thread.
>> No. 117495
I certainly like the idea, though it seems it could get a tad tricky to coordinate everyone that wants to participate. A thread would probably just work better, although it would be far less entertaining.

But I'll vote for "Right" and see where this goes.

Let's kick this off then, shall we?

I will be doing a live reading of a short story (~2k words) over Skype at 22:00 UTC today (in about 6 hours). If you want to participate or simply come listen, add me on Skype (details in the email field).

You don't need a microphone or anything (unless you wanna talk), and it's a pretty simple program to install. If you can manage to post on a *chan, you can probably figure out how to get Skype working.

I know, right? His name is Dr. Hooves! Silly W.
But he is "canon". Named collector's card is his claim to fame, I believe, although he hasn't been called it on the show yet.

Don't you mean Words?
>> No. 117517
No, I meant views. The idea is to give lesser known fics attention, instead of just whining about whatever's currently featured on FimFic.
>> No. 117532
I still think that 10 K views is too much. how about 5?
>> No. 117535
Sure, that's probably better.

>In an attempt to give lesser known stories more attention, I thought we. . .

I sort of dislike this whole part of the thread. While I think there should be a 10k limit to avoid having the reading material be something everyone has read, I want to read good stories. And frankly, a lot of the good stories have a lot of views.

That's just my two cents on the matter.
>> No. 117614
Not entirely true.
>> No. 117619
And there are a lot of good stories without lots of views as well. We'd only be giving more attention to stories that deserved it, presumably.

Well, I had a lot of fun during yesterday's live reading. When should we schedule the next one?
>> No. 117698
I would highly recommend Administration is Magic, despite it going against the length and "completed" requirements. It's simply phenomenal, and that's coming from me.
Personally, I enjoy longer stories as opposed to short one-shots, so I don't mind a reading taking place over several meetings as long as it's good.
>> No. 117706
The only length requirement is that it can be read in under a week. And at 75k, it shouldn't be too hard. Also, so long as the ending of the current chapter is satisfying, I think an exception can be made. I just worry that something will happen, and it'll never be finished.

>75k word stories
>incomplete stories

Complete one-shots only, please.

Views shouldn't matter, though I'd rather more obscure stories for the sake of this being more "diamonds in the rough" than "read shit from the feature box, then bitch about how shit it was".

I suggest doing the next one Friday 22:00 UTC.

I probably won't be able to participate because of timezones, but I've been reading some one-shots lately, so have some suggestions.

>The Carnivore's Prayer
The gryphons were not always monsters. That came later.

In the earliest days, they were our friends. They flew alongside pegasi. They shared the land with earth ponies. They studied beside unicorns. There was no fear between us. That came later too.

Time drew our people apart, but it was not time that made them monsters. They made that choice themselves; they chose their fate. And it was the
greatest gryphon who sealed it.

He was born, many years ago, on a mountain far to the north...
(how this is unviewed enough to fit the requirements I don't even want to think about)

>Home Is Where the Harp Is
Ever since Bon-Bon left for a new life in Manehatten, Lyra's life has lost its focus. She gets up, she goes to work, she eats, she goes to sleep. One day she knows she's going build up the courage to tell Bon-Bon how she really feels about her and they can live happily ever after.

That day will never come. Something terrible is happening in Equestria. Something that could be the end of the world.
The Smooze has arrived and no-one can stop it, not even Twilight Sparkle. What hope then does Lyra have?
(delicious Blueshift)

>Who Makes the Wind Blow?
I've always wanted a cloud... and now the day is finally here.
(most obscure Vault feature ever)

>Five Should Be Enough
When a tragic event befalls Applejack, she takes drastic measures in an effort to prevent it. But can a simple farm pony make a difference in the face of an inevitable end?

A story about the sacrifices we aren't willing to make, and those that we are.
(haven't read it, but /fic/ lurves timeloops)

I think the current "end" chapter caps fairly well, all things considered.

Wellll, it's not your thread...
We could always use the live-readings as a jumping-off point to get people interested in stories. So, for example, we could choose longfics to read the first two or three chapters before moving onto something else; if people found it interesting, they could always read the rest on their own time.
