Here is a thread for people to post their recommendations so new people can get a general picture of the highlights of fiction in the fandom, or for people to ask for recommendations.

1.) No self-promotion, your work should stand for itself and make others want to refer to it.
2.) Provide tags and some small additional information for people to know what they are heading into.

1.) Do post on this thread and promoted works that deserve the attention.
2.) If you see people asking for recommendations, direct them here and ask them to delete their thread.

That is all.

A bit unorthodox really, as I should be opening up a thread to reveal this, and other progress to the world, but I believe this will do for now.

I've officially completed the remastering of this piece, and await solely for Samurai's word. It has already been given a green light by Vimbert, who originally worked very closely with Nick to bring the piece to life. Needless to say, he loved it, so I'm more than certain all of you will love it as well.

Also, since this is a recommendation thread, I think I'll toss my hat into the ring. I'll go ahead and suggest everyone read " Starlight Over Detrot: A Noir Tale." This Noir-style story takes everything I more or less had planned on doing with Equestria Noir (story I'm still working on), and gives it a comedic spin that works quite excellently. It certainly raised the bar for what could be done with Noir, and I'm sure plenty of you out there would enjoy the story.

It's like somepony took everything good about G1 and made a fic about it. The story also gives Iron Will character depth.

I have to say, I loved The Three Whooves. Reading it was like watching both shows at the same time. I can't wait for the day when someone at the BBC discovers ponies and decides to make the next Doctor's assistant like Derpy.

I have spent many a night looking through FiMFiction and numerous other sources for fics that have homosexual male couples as the main characters and/or protagonists...
That sounds like it would be an easy task. But I'm not looking for yaoi clop material, or even basic shipping. I'm looking for stories that *happen* to have male homosexual main characters, who do get into relationship, but are not created for the express purpose of selling the relationship to the audience. An adventure, where the protagonist just happens to be gay, but the story is not based on the novelty of him (or her) getting it on with another character of the same gender. A romantic subplot as opposed to a story about two males being shoved together by fate.
I would also prefer non-genderbendent couples, because those would just be lesbians in stallion-suits.
TL;DR I'm not looking for 'pairings', 'ships', or other superficial form of 'love' and companionship. I want the ocean, not the boat, to be the hook.

Hey, I'm from the last thread.
I'm looking for stuff that focuses more on psychological issues than anything. It can be grimdark, shippy, violent, but the less cloppy the better.
I prefer ones that are either claustophobic or with the character on the run, but I'm up for anything. If there are any fics about ponies struggling with psychological issues without it being grimdark, that's cool too. I'm really having trouble finding good stuff.

Stuff I've liked: End of Ponies, Crooked Tree's tumblrs, Silent Ponyville (have read most of them), Flutterstalker tumblr, Crapplejack tumblr, Paranoid Twilight tumblr, Pony Psychology Series, Pyroshy
I just couldn't get into Fallout: Equestria, though.

Thank you for your time!

I believe you may find similar intrigue in Seattle_lite's Divergence, though it is not the sort of thing one would label a war fic.
Consider, as well... I forgot the name, but there was a fic about Twilight messing up a spell and finding herself and Rainbow Dash in a darkened Equestria. It was an intentional subversion of the 'messed-up-a-spell' plot device, in addition to bein ridiculously serious at all times. It had a spot of war here and there.

This fic is awesome and sci-fi and amazing and I really wanted to shill it, so here it is;

"Hanna, the CEO of Hofvarpnir Studios, just won the contract to write the official My Little Pony MMO. Hanna has built an A.I. Princess Celestia and given her one basic drive: to satisfy everybody's values through friendship and ponies. Princess Celestia will satisfy your values through friendship and ponies, and it will be completely consensual."

This might be the understatement of the century. Or not. No, she actually does EXACTLY that. And it's awesome. As in, it causes awe, and terror, and you don't really know whether you like it or not. Really great future shock, and weirdness, and wish fulfilment of the "you get exactly what you asked for/wanted/needed" sort...

Just a bunch of ideas because I'm too way out there to make too much sense*:

-- Have each story have a string with various elements which tell when was the story recommended and by whom.

--- People can recommend stories, with a number limit of recommendations per day.

-- Others will follow the people recommending, accepting or denying their recommendations as they come.

-- This will weight the recommendations of particular people so that the results will be more attune to what you want (if recommender A and recommender B both give you all your recommendations, but recommender A also tends to give you shit, recommendations of recommender B will have more weight).

-- If a recommender is more widely accepted, his general recommendation for everyone is upgraded (and maybe give him more recommendation votes, fuck if I know).

-- Calculating the general recommendation trends, you would get an absolute recommendation rate and recommend stories to everyone based upon the string I talked about.

-- The string will be, however, purge periodically so that the recommendation strength doesn't keep it at the top. The record of who recommended what on this string is important because now you will have the value based upon the second generation of recommendations (aka, a first group read it, recommended it, and then others recommended it too).

-- To make it easier for more unknown people to get recommendations, you would reward those who recommend stories with the least amount of people in their particular generation. So, if you go and read Pen Stroke stories and mark them as the best thing ever since pegging, be aware your absolute recommendation rating (and thus your effect on what everyone will be recommended rather than their personal recommendations) will be greatly reduced as everyone and their mothers recommends the story. However, if you go and recommend SUPERMAGISTERMAN1000 (not a real guy... I hope) with his story with no recommendations what so ever, and then everyone else likes what they read, you get your voting improved like nothing else and your recommendations will have more weight and power.

-- Time periods for each generation are probably a bad idea, so I suggest you limit each generation to an ever increasing amount of people. say, a Fibonacci sequence multipled by ten, or something. I don't know, fuck math right now.

-- Controlling for tags and the sort of story should probably also go into play.

-- I don't know more, just run with this and try to makesense of it.

*To way out there means I am terribly intoxicated, so fuck grammar too!

I would see it more as a multi-level program.
-Suggest a random story, possibly from the current feature box.
--Alternatively, prompt the user to enter a story or author they enjoy.

*scan multiple stories and assign certain characteristics, including and reaching further than characters, tags/genre, and wordcount.
**characteristics would include things like POV, different writing styles (which would require somepony to do extensive study on in order to distinguish them), plotlines/premises (listed categorically)
***two obvious styles would be artistic vs. vague

~Log the upvotes vs downvotes on the story itself, and compare to the upvotes and downvotes of stories with similar characteristics in the user's favorites list
~log the upvotes and downvotes of stories the user has read
~use the up vs down votes to logically decide which characteristics the user likes
~if a certain tag, character, or author shows up more than a certain percentage of the time, apply more weight to their stories when conducting a search/scan

This is just a start of course, and I think you'll find it models somewhat what the Pandora Music Genome Project does. I don't have the computing know-how to pull this off—personally I think it's too complicated, given the vast amounts of fan fiction currently in existance, and even more pouring in every day; one would have to read every single story in existence—including all the new ones—for such a system to work.
>> No. 125247
Such a system requires a lot of data points to make such recommendations. The only place with such data for ponyfics is Fimfiction. If Fimfiction were open source, someone (or a team of someones) could produce such a system.

Fimfiction isn't open source, though, so the onus is on the Fimfiction developers to make such a system. I think they already tried and failed before, so it's not likely to happen.

I'll just pretend that people actually visit this page and give a recommendation:

This story, entitled "Not My Little Diamond"

The synopsis paints it as a Diamond Tiara-centric fic, but the description doesn't do it justice.

In fact, it's one of the most unique and interesting "human" in Equestria stories I've ever read (and I've read a lot). Heck, it takes about 50,000 words for the human to even get to Equestria, but the words before that still manage to be quite entertaining.

I guess you could complain that the story takes just a little too long to get going, but I'm confident that it'll be worth the wait.

Does anyone know of any good adventure stories set in Equestria? Something in the vein of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Leigh Brackett or Robert E. Howard. Conan is a good example of what I'm talking about though not necessarily as dark.Think something a similar sense of adventure as the John Carter movie. I'd love it even more if they were short stories or written in an episodic format.

No one's really requested it but two really good sad stories I read were Simply Rarity and Spikes Centennial. Simply Rarity expands on her character while being very emotionally moving and fitting her show character pretty well. Spikes Centennial is set during Spikes 100th birthday and made me start to well up at parts. Both excellently written stories and a good length to read in an afternoon. I enjoyed them much more than say My Little Dashy or Cupcakes.

The Pony adventure story of excellence is It's Dangerous Business, Going out your Door by Jetfire. It is very much LotR with ponies.

I would also suggest Long Distance by Ezn, not as good as Dangerous business, but it is still a pretty solid tale.

Apart from that, all other adventure stories I have read aren't really all that great, but I'm sure others here will disagree.

I'm not quite sure how to word this, but can anyone recommend some fanfics that reward careful reading? I'm thinking about the antithesis of trollfics, "blank discovers blank" stories, random comedies where you need to turn your brain off to enjoy it, that sort of thing. Are there any stories out there that are written so that... I don't want to say that are "deep" or "literary," because it's not like I think you can't write a good random story, but I'd like to read something that's aimed at a conscientious, thoughtful reader. Length and genre don't really matter, just something that stretches the brain without being gimmicky. Any suggestions?

Some of the more thoughtful stories I've read are by shortskirtsandexplosions. It's quite the epic, but there's a lot in http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19198/background-pony that you might not get unless you read past the surface.

Another interesting one by him is http://www.fimfiction.net/story/33124/the-last-tears-in-tartarus . Additionally, I'd suggest taking a look at The End of Ponies, but that one's getting a significant restructuring and rewrites right now, so I'd wait on it if I were you.

Letters From a Friend at the End of the World is really good. Not finished yet but it goes between a sort of mystery plot involving Twi and RD to a heroic fantasy tale involving Trixie. It's really good. The author handles both sides of the tale which have very different feels and makes it work well.

The Archer and the Smith
Hands down the best pony adventure story I've read. Really well done world building, great character relationships and an awesomely done quest. It could get sent to a fantasy mag as is without telling them it was a fanfic and I bet it would be published.

>The Archer and the Smith
>Hands down the best pony adventure story I've read.
Wow, you haven't read a lot of adventure stories. The first with the dragon at the end really didn't have any tension. The problem is that our hero, Lyra, doesn't really seem to care if the dragon kills her or not. And if she doesn't care then neither will the reader. Though I do admit that the world building was great. I suppose that when the author gets around to writing chapter two the sequel that it might be better.

I read a lot of fantasy so that didn't bother me too bad. I don't think a hero who doesn't care if they live or die brings all the tension out. The stakes were on the fate of the world/bringing hope. The motivations were personal. It didn't read like most pony adventure, it read like heroic fantasy and that's what I like about it. If you think a character who doesn't care whether they live or die makes a story bad and not good then we must read very different types of fantasy. The dragon fight was pretty good and I think her not caring about succeeding added to the tension. Because she didn't care the author was pretty free to let her live or die, the story up to that point didn't make the outcome already know. I hate stories where you already know the hero is going to win. This one could have ended on a happy not like it did but was very well set up to be a tragic ending. I read different fantasy from most people though. I'm not a LOTR fan but I am a fan of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser or the Thomas Covenant series.

Not really. I'd suggest that we make one ourselves, but good luck getting us to agree on which ten stories are the best in the fandom. Just go to the /fic/ception http://www.fimfiction.net/group/301/ficception group, and look through our favorites lists.

Wow, Cheer On, My Little Dashie and On a Cross and Arrow? I certainly don't think my tastes are at all similar those guys'. Though Pirates for a Day was cute.

Here's a rated list of most of the 6-Star fics on EqD: http://onemansponyramblings.blogspot.com/p/6-star-reviews-by-star-rating.html (compiled by a critic). You could consider the 5 and 4 star stuff the "best of" list.

Here's everything on FIMfic, sorted by rating: http://www.fimfiction.net/index.php?view=category&order=top

My personal top ten complete fics would probably be (and I'm not going to order this because then I'll be here all day):
Tangled Up in Blues
It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door
The Old Stories
The Carnivore's Prayer
The Star in Yellow
Somewhere Only We Know
Fallout: Equestria
Background Pony
Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel

>but good luck getting us to agree on which ten stories are the best in the fandom
That we can't speaks wonders about the volume of good stuff out there. And of course there's tastes, and how no-one's read everything, and how some people haven't read as many as others, and etc...

Eh, I couldn't get into Pirates for a Day. It didn't make me feel like a kid again—as all good middle-grade books should—it made me feel like I was watching children play. It didn't feel "magical" I guess.

Hmm, I wonder if it'd be a good idea to at least try to make a top ten list though.

I know we can't agree on a list, so that's why there's community voting like top 25 videos of 2012 http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/01/top-25-videos-of-2012.html

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll try those methods and I also found the ponyfictionvault.net which is more like the most influential or pioneer fics rather than the best but it's still good.

Perhaps not an absolute top ten but a good reviewer's personal top ten favourites with a short synopsis and commentary would be insightful.

Hi there, I'm looking for a couple of stories:

1.) A very short story of Twilight walking away from canterlot. The last line is Her twilight. and I think it was based on a picture.

2.) There was a very old story about Spike dying and reuniting with his friends in the after-life.

3.) The air froze. A sort of creepy pasta journal.

All in all, I just want every single link to the oldest fics you might have, possibly ones that aren't on Fimfiction and that sort of stuff.

If you're looking for humorous slice-of-life Comedy, then you should make some time to read Princesses Don't Potty. It's a cleverly written and quite enjoyable fic.

"Celestia wants Twilight and her friends to loosen up a little bit around her. Luna just wants to try the hard cider. During a surprise visit to Sweet Apple Acres at the tail end of cider season, Princess Luna has just a bit too much to drink, and when she makes a rather inappropriate joke, Twilight comes to the very uncomfortable realization that she has never seen Celestia excuse herself to use the restroom."

Really, it's not worth the trouble. That extra Apple Bloom scene is basically a reveal, a bad joke, then end. Plus the original Cupcakes was riddled with mechanical errors, which didn't do much to make the plot any more believable.

Title: The Secret Life of Rarity
Author: BronyWriter.
Tags: [dark][tragedy][Rarity. Heh, duh][the rest of the Mane Six][Dem dere royal types][That one brown mare with the pink mane and tail][Bill Murray]

The SLoR and its respective sequels and spin offs, all written by Bronywriter, someone who has very quickly turned into one of my favorite authors, and not just of the fandom. This story is very close to replacing Watership Down/LotR trilogy as one of my all time favorite stories, and has replaced my favorite FiMfic writer.

Authors description: Everypony in Ponyville is happy, carefree, and content with their life on the whole...except one. Rarity harbors a dark secret that nopony can ever find out about, a murderous secret as a matter of fact. She is Equestria's only active serial killer. She has to balance her fashion life, her friends, and her murderous urges as best as she can. This is the story of her mind.

Although BW sums it up pretty nicely, I want to add a few words of my own. This story is dark. So dark. When BW says "the story of her mind," it was no joke. It delves deep into her psyche, seeing darkness to which no man, nor pony, should ever bear witness. Having said that, once you start reading, you can't stop. It's one of those things you know is so personal, so wrong to look at or watch, but you just can't tear your eyes away.

In BW's description, he makes it clear this is NOT a "Cupcakes with Rarity" type story. Although the amount of gore depicted could be considered Cupcakes-esque, the story line behind the gore is better than any no-gore fic could possibly imagine. Where Cupcakes was gore and shock for the sake of gore and shock, TSoR is a suspenseful thriller with gore to spruce it up a bit, as it were. Not that it needs it, but in my opinion if there was absolutely no gore in the story, the story could stand by itself.

There are currently two sequels which are finished and two spin offs being written now. The sequels, "The Public Life of Sweetie Belle", and "Broken Blossom" detail the after effects of Rarity's actions. While The Public Life of Sweetie Belle is more along the lines of Sweetie trying to wrap her mind around her own actions and the actions of her sister, and her attempts to make ponies believe she is not her aunt. Broken Blossom is about Sweetie Belle's daughter.

I actually enjoy Broken Blossom more, which is odd for me, being very reluctant to read a story where an OC is the main protagonist, A.K.A. Joyous Blossom. As this was a canonical sequel to TSoR, I read it anyway. Don't like OC fics? Take it from me, totally worth it. Her being the sister and niece of Sweetie Belle and Rarity, respectively, one can ascertain and imagine the mannerisms that accompany the aforementioned elder ponies, being present in Blossom. It's either Bronywriter's jean-e-oos or the familiarity with two similar characters, probably a bit of both, but no matter what it actually works.

The two spin offs are "Ripples"(This will be a collaboration betwixt BW and other authors), and "The Word is Fear." While "Ripples" is basically a group of short stories detailing the, yes I'll say it, ripples that Rarity's actions have caused around Equestria, "The Word is Fear" is an alternate ending to "Broken Blossom." Both are great so far. I would give more detailed, but as they are yet to be finished, and I know whatever finish BW and the contributing authors are cooking up will be awesome, I'd prefer to comment more on them AFTER I have read through them entirely.

All-in-all, an amazing series of fics written by someone I'm sure could magically produce a spectacular and proper plot line for "Cupcakes", "My Little Dashie", and "A Fun Day!" (I'd even put 20 bucks down on BW to rewrite any of the stories Rapetrain-Express has ever pulled from his ass, and make it a masterpiece worthy of high praise on every FiM blog/image board/local brony meetup/the hearts and souls of laughing children.) If you like the dark, if you relish in the fears and the mental and physical anguish of those kaleidoscopic equines we all love to torture in our stories, or if you simply would LOVE to see certain griffons/magicians/minotaurs get their just desserts. then pal, I've got a story for you!

I'm not promoting my work, I am simply asking for some honest help.

But while I'm here, I think a story that deserves more attention is GingerNutGin's Dinner With My Love, a pretty melancholic look at the Fancy/Fleur shipping. It's not straight up sad, but its very empty and you feel that the two have personal problems, but you don't know if they will ever bring them up, let alone solve them. I thought it was great and severely underrated.

So just to clarify: Dinner With My Love is great, and I need a prereader. Care to help?

So, since fall i've run through the repertoir of Blueshift and now I'm closing Cold in Gardez.
Both have been a pretty fun ride. Blueshift had great comedy stories and Cold in Gardez scored well for his more adventurous stories.

Time for me to move on to a new author.
I prefer ponies only, especially mane cast stories. Not so much pure OC or HiE.
A long story can be quite the adventure, but I do like to read shorter stories (less than 10k words)

So, which writer is a good pick, going from both writers I've mentioned?

Also, it was 2 peas in a pod that led me to Blueshift and Naked Singularity that led me to Cold in Gardez

Bumps and greetings, gentlemen.
You see, I'm really into ponies, but at the same time I'm big fan of Fallout series, so it's only expected, I think, that I read it and liked it. Then there was "Project Horizons", which I like even more, but eventually I grew tired of all that pain, suffering and anguish, especially when it comes to main hero's moral problems. Did a quick search and I didn't find his name mentioned in the thread, so I shall.

Reality Check. Not sure if y'all have heard of him. This is the penname of RH Junior, a famous furry comic author. He takes a very critical view of the FiM universe and often in his blogs can be found being very aggressive towards the choices made in show. In fact, one of his series has to do with completely rewriting the Crystal Empire events as well as the events of Magical Mystery Cure and the Season 4 Opener. But I like to believe that this is because he really cares for the series and wants to see it do better than what it has done.

I really enjoy his writing, especially how he expanded the Nix-verse, another that I recommend looking up, and giving Spike a lot of positive attention. Sometimes his stories can feel like a lot of 'Let me tell you how much you suck' speeches directed at key characters but then he turns around and give those characters wonderful chances to shine.

I highly recommend starting with Parting Words [www.fimfiction.net] for the start of the Alicorn saga and Nightmare Night and Nyx [www.fimfiction.net] if you have already read the original Nyx story and want more.

He has several more stories; two being ideas of better examples of HiE stories and two being a love letter to everyone who hates really bad fanfictions.

I'm always hoping to hear my email ding to alert me of a new chapter and I think you will agree.

Implied in your offered information:

> He takes a very critical view of the FiM universe and often in his blogs can be found being very aggressive towards the choices made in show.
> especially how he expanded the Nix-verse, another that I recommend looking up

There's a combined impression that he dislikes the shows direction, coupled with a feeling that he likes the concept if not execution of Nyx.
It only takes a tiny bit of reading between the lines to get that implication too.

You forgot this part.

If I made a mistake and chose the wrong words, then that is my problem. But I hope that you aren't seeing things that aren't there.

Not too much you can do to avoid it. Not everyone is going to take the same reading from anything, but I hope you can see how it comes across that way.
It's the combination of ideas that the show needs to be better (which is a sound subjective statement), and that Nyx is interesting enough to have a universe to expand upon (also subjective).

I'm trying not to cut into your original post entirely, because you have a reasonable subjective opinion, and I haven't investigated Reality Check in detail.
If my opinion gets involved, I think I'll have to avoid him personally, but that's because I really am not a fan of single character driven monologues, Nyx, HiE, fanfic parodies, Nyx, or Nyx.
Your mileage may vary.

Not that I have anything against the HiE genre, or humans in general. But it's just not the sort of thing I'm looking to read when I'm lookin' fer ponies.

Oddly enough, in that case, it is in the Nyx universe that he gives Spike an epic sized Crowning Moment of Awesome.

If that isn't enough, then you might like his Alicorn Saga that starts with Parting Words. In that, instead of Twilight going Alicorn, it's the whole Mane Six. And it doesn't stop there.

Are there any that deal with realistic mental diseases without being too grimdark?
>> No. 130222
I avoid those.

I don't think that we as a culture are ready to handle mental disease.

Asylum. Excellent blend of hope and despair while maintaining a delicate balance between "Is she insane or not?".

Ooh, classic premise there, but still, I should read it. Reminds me of what Autumn was supposed to be.

So, I've read millions and millions of of words of fanfics, but none in the last 6 months. Circumstances have changed, and I'm looking to get back into the swing of things. So what's good that's been published recently? Any genre, any kind, I probably read all of them.

I'll direct you to this:

Slywit's Paradise recently updated, a good one if your want some inventive origin story stuff for Celestia and Luna. From Canterlot With Love by Sagebrush is another excellent adventure story with a solid grasp of humour to boot. A search on FiMFiction should turn up any of those.

Let me give you my Favorite List:

There are also my own stories, but aside from the one shots.. I haven't actually FINISHED any of them.

Ooh, I love it when people write origin stories like that. Thanks, I will definitely look into those.

On a similar note, does anyone remember that story called something like "When Were Young"? I can't find it now. It's somewhere in my hundreds of favorites but I have no idea where, and it's probably updated and I haven't gotten to read it. It detailed the early life of Celestia, Luna, and Discord when there were still alicorns and a thriving land (in their lore).

Thanks, I haven't read many of these.

Found it!

I've been feeling pretty crazy lately, and I was thinking back to the events of Lesson Zero. I would like to see some fanfictions where Twilight goes crazy (like in the episode) or otherwise undergoes severe (self-inflicted?) mental trauma, so if you could go ahead and reply with a nice little list of them that would be great.

Oh, and any stories should be at least somewhat rational regarding the actions/thoughts of the characters; I don't want anything random like Cupcakes.

I remember feeling positives for this one.
http://derpy.me/m104u - If you want to see what I said about the pre-production version.
I didn't look at the final, so it could have done anything, or changed nothing. Still...

I'm writing a fic for my own amusement that features a lot of crossover and time travel stuff. Ditzy 'Derpy' Doo is in it and I thought it would be fun for the Doctor to show up at some point, but I don't have any idea how he's charactereized due to having never read any of the fics.

So I came here to ask about Doctor fics, specifically those featuring Derpy as a companion. Which are the better ones and/or those most entrenched in the fandom's collective conscious?

I've already found what I understand to be the 'original' Derpy companion fic, My Little Time Lord:

This one is also a Doctor fic, linked twice on this page at that, so I'll check it out too.

Any others?

I think heard about a headcannon once about Rainbow Dash leaving school or running away or something like that when she was younger. Any suggestions?
