PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Attention, newcomers to /fic/ and those unfamiliar with common posting protocol! This sticky contains the basic guidelines, suggestions and tips for posting here as well as guides and links for helping you to improve your writing. Follow the guide and you will find your stay far more enjoyable and productive!

The Ponychan Fan-Fiction Five Step Review List
  1. We strive to keep the /fic/ board running smoothly and fairly. To make sure all writers have an equal chance to get their first works noticed, reviewed, and commented upon, we suggest that your first post be done on an established review thread.
  2. If your work deserves someone else’s attention, it deserves your attention first. Make sure you have run the text through a spell-check and grammar-check if at all possible. A poorly edited story will make the reviewer’s job that much more difficult, and you may not like what you get back.
  3. Be polite. You want your work to be reviewed, right? So does everyone else who is posting. Post once on a thread, and give it time. If the thread is already on the front page, consider ‘saging’, which keeps the thread from bumping up. This is done by putting sage in the email field of your post.
  4. Looking for a particular fic you just can’t seem to find? There’s several archives where readers can find fics and for authors to know there's a stable location for their work (see below).
  5. In order to prevent anyone from seeing something they don't want to see, please use the subject field to notify others when a story contains shipping or grimdark (stories that involve death, famine, plagues etc.)

What's past is past. If you're getting honest feedback on a living thread, keep it there. These guidelines are meant to prevent additional occurrences, and angry/sad writers wondering where the help has gone.
>> No. 43449
Let us be clear what this guidelines are suppose to do:

Fic is a place where we aim at helping writer improve or readers discuss their favorite fic or writers present their work. We aim to do so efficiently and in an organized fashion, just like writing itself.

What does this mean?

1.) If you are posting a piece here for it to be edited or reviewied, don't make a thread for it because most, if not all, people will likely ignored it. We are send the rejects from EqD for a reason, they found your story deficient and other readers will probably do too, making your thread be dead from the start.

2.) You want to discuss a story? Then use that search /fic/ function, type the title or a keyword you know might be related, and discuss there. We don't need a thousand threads about the same subject.

3.) If you are truly presenting and don't need or want it to be improved (doesn't mean that a little feedback here or there is bad) then you better make sure it's as good as it can be after being checked by various people as to make sure they aren't just space wasters (and thus will end up in a review thread anyway). Preferably, do not post a thread per story and simply post all your stories in one place as it's easier for readers to find, far more organized and less of a clutter.

At the end, it's all about this: how can we get as many people to improve their writing, enjoy said writing and in general make the writing of the fandom better?

The guidelines aren't perfect I assure you but it's ceartainly better than what we used to have.

I used to actually write my fics on /fic/ lol

I understand that the majority of this is designed to make people better writers and clean it up a bit , but y'know, some people write for fun too , things dont need to be perfect, it seems that this is taken as -serious business - now , i just remember when it wasnt so stuffy :0

Nobody wants a thread where the OP can't even tell the difference between to/too/two taking up space on the front page on a board about writing, after all. Var? I have only seen him commenting on 5 threads and most of said comments aren't review related. Some of his post are worth reading, others not so much. Being a good contributer doesn't make you a reviewer.

Vimbert is a must.

Vanner is going away for pony novel writing month and thus his thread is basically dead.

MintyRest should be added.

Llama does his/her services regularly enough to warrant his inclusion. The other people that are now on Training grounds? Yeah, not so much. Snarkle status of doing regularly or not compare to just someone who drops by and does a review is still an open question.

Ion-Sturm hasn't done a review in ages and should be removed.

NickNack hasn't done a review in ages and should be removed.

Midnight Shadow hasn't done a review in age and should be removed.

I think we can keep the samurai because he is somewhat still doing reviews (although as such rate it doesn't matter so he should soon have to be removed.)

As for Seattle, Seattle stated that if he was going to be making a review thread it would be after the next chapter of his fic was done. He has failed to do so and thus should he removed.

Actually, as far as I can read, it's other pony related projects and some RL (depending on the person).

Saying you are reviewer while not actually doing any reviewing is kind of cheating people who, by the way, you are constantly asking to read the sticky and the rules.

I can understand that you might have other things to do, but it still doesn't stop the fact that they aren't doing their announced function, in a sticky nonetheless.

I know the reason, as a matter of fact, I told you the reasons here:
>>44819

all I'm saying is that the list needs to be updated and the links to their respective threads added.

Right now, after some lurking, the only thread which hasn't gone belly up (or haven't been put into slow-mo) are the training grounds, and that has stories with no responses for days.

Where is this allege review help going to get to people? You put this giant list like if there were a whole platoon of them but in reality, we effectively now have 2-3 reviewers. If this sticky is to exist, we must recognize that fact.
>> No. 44908
>>43438

Me too. Too many rules and not enough naptime. But I'll delete my thread after I have rewritten a good chunk of it so it loses it's purpose.

>>44835

Perhaps a better idea is to make /critic/ or /review/ forums and move the review threads there? It IS quite a pain to browse through /fic/ for those review threads and try to find out which one is the most active. If there'd be a forum with nothing but reviewers' own threads it'd be much more simple and effective.

But I'm getting off topic now.
>> No. 44909
>>44908
It was deemed impracticable by the mods.

Although, quite frankly, a quick search using that nice little "search /fic/ threads" links on top for things called review wouldn't hurt, you can see which one is most active by which one is on top.

My problem is that the list offers quite a few more reviewers than there actually is, which of course makes people have the wrong impression ("We aren't reviewing cause we are too cool for that.") which helps no one.

I disagree. I feel it both adds a bit of personality to the doc of guidelines, and lets whoever actually reads it know what they're getting into with whom. There is a marked contrast between a Sparky and a Sturm review (not that I've seen one of the latter in ages, but nevertheless).

I think it should stay, and be updated as called for. Thats why it's a GDoc after all. We can do that.
btw Vim, are you on it yet?
>> No. 45430
I'm thinking that an open doc for the reviewer list should be made. This way, new reviewers could add themselves to it and retiring ones could be removed. Links could also be added and it would be quite easy to update them whenever a new version of the thread was made.

>hypothetical problem, one of a hundred-
Say, we have a spat. Say, Vimbert pisses off some guy who is incapable of intellectual honesty in reception of a 'harsh' critique. Dude could go in there, and say horrible, albeit amusing things, about his mother and how many times she dropped him on the head. It could be days before anyone caught the change and corrected it.

The potential for drama would be huge, and frankly, inevitable. As a cynical student of the human condition, I find the prospect amusing. As a reviewer with a vested interest in the efficiency of the board, the notion is decidedly unwise.

Hmm, would it be considered advisable to simply post stories directly into my thread? It seems the current fashion to post a link to Google Docs or some equivalent, but the vast majority of my story is formatted to be posted directly, in sections.

It's an oldie from the roll threads in /oat/ a few months ago, for clarity's sake. I've already run it by a reviewer and all indications point to "repulsed, but enthralled and eagerly awaiting more". I think posting in sections, directly, might motivate me to deliver more.

The aim of the rules, as I understand it, is to try to keep the stories to the least amount of threads as possible.

If you currently have a thread for your story then I don't see why not (although, from what I have seen, reviewers do prefer gdocs, so that would really be up to them if they want to copy-paste stuff).

From personal experience it's rather ugly, but it works (search for pony cyoa to see mine or track down rilliswriter's thread).
That said, mine was born out of necessity due to its special formatting. I advise you to reformat it and post in gdocs. Not only will it look far better, but it'll be a snap to edit and readers won't have to scroll past a couple thousand words to reply to it.

Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but constantly repeating the same message to every Screwball or Derpy is getting a little annoying, doubly so for me since I'm stuck on a PSP with a slow-ass on-screen keyboard and no way to copy/paste my ranting. To remedy this problem, I have formulated the idea of there being a image macro of sorts, on which there would be several distinct pictures with numbers that correspond to a certain guideline. With this, one could simply post the picture and list which rules were so callously ignored. Preferably, they would all be somewhat vindictive, thereby providing the necessary amount of public humiliation without running the risk of my love of ceative put-downs interefering with the important message (that they done screwed up).

We already have a couple, namely the picture of Batman slapping Robin for not posting in a review thread and Samuel L. Jackson verbally thrashing the unfortunate fool who disregards the guidelines, so we're off to a good start.

Alas, my skill in picture making is lacking (it's my dump stat: Everything goes into Charisma and Intelligence), so I'm hoping someone more talanted might be able to bring this to fruition.

Ion-Sturm out.

Is it possible that you're taking this a bit too seriously? New dumbasses means the fan-base is growing, which is a good thing, and a normal-type dumbass only needs to be reprimanded once to get the point. If done gently, it's a bro gained rather than a bro lost.

I remember when I used to be a dumbass where online communities were concerned, always saying the wrong thing, and I still think about the horrible things people said to me. Alas, it has scarred me. I wouldn't want to do the same to others, despite their dumbassery.

The laws (of Canada) state that ignorance of the law is not a valid defence. That said, when the rules were tucked away on the side of the main page, it was to be expected that people wouldn't see them. Now, however the very first thing you see when entering /fic/ is the big red letters. There's being ignorant, and then there's just being a stupid, lazy "dumbass".
The pictures would be designed to be less intimidating, actually. A smarmy picture, or a raging god (/sarcasm)? Easy choice to me.

I'm more in favor of something copy/pastable. For example:

Hello, writer.

Look at your post. Now look at those in review threads. Now back to yours. Now back to the review threads. Sadly, your post is not in a review thread. But if you were to stop making threads for chapters zero and one of incomplete fics and put them in a review thread, it could actually be reviewed as if it were in a review thread. Look down. Back up. Where are you? You're in your own thread, where you are likely to generate no traffic. What do you need? I have it. It's a link to all the review threads.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1owVb0k43DL_fus3WVuP4M83SqRZTWhaHcs-XUCXRu9Y/edit?hl=en_US

Look again. Your fic is now being reviewed. Any fic gets reviewed when it's submitted to a review thread. I'm a pony.

A copy/paste message would indeed be constructive, but it needs to be WAY less verbose than that. If someone fails to comprehend the gargantuan red words at the top of page zero, it's not likely that they're going to read all (or any) of that.

That being said, I think a pithy image macro would work even better. Perhaps one that isn't an animated gif; it wouldn't be animated in the post the way it would in /pic/. Here's a variation on the Batman theme I made yesterday. Three minutes of clone tool and text. Piece of cake.

Okay, /fic/, here is my question. I read the rules before posting this, but I still can't figure out if it is okay.

I am in the middle of writing what i think will be a great story, and I'd like to post it and get some feedback. However...

It's a clopfiction. I read the rules, but it's never mentioned. Is this considered the same thing as shipping, or is it so unacceptable that no one even bothers mentioning it?

I think it's well-written and I'd like some feedback, but I don't want to break any rules. Help!

Hello, fillies and gentlecolts. This is Enigma 9994, and I run a website called Pony Draft. You can find it at http://ponydraft.blogspot.com/ The gist of the site is to provide a place for peer reviewing and proofreading of fanfics submitted, before they get posted to, say, Equestria Daily.

This site has a style very different to that of /fic/ threads - its format was modeled directly off of Equestria Daily, providing a system of posting and editing that is simple, effective, and familiar. Pony Draft has had some amount of success since its inception; fanfics have been submitted, edited, and posted to the frontpage of EqD. The problem is that not many bronies know about the site yet.

It would be cool if you guys could check out the site and see what you think. It's a growing community, and hopefully, it has potential to help many bronies. If you have any questions, you can ask them here and I'll be happy to answer. Thanks.

Bad threads (i.e., uninformative threads that don't give potential readers any indication what the story is about and/or beg for reviews outside of the... two review threads that are still active) have no place in an efficiently-run /fic/.

As to why the moderators entertain the "other side" to this debate (which is akin to a news report giving equal time to someone discussing a new archaeological find and an "opponent" that believes the world is only six thousand years old, in that facts based in reality shouldn't be up for debate)... given that we're starting the fifth week of waiting on them to actually do something after it took them two weeks to decide they needed to do something about, I don't think anyone can accuse the mods of erring on the side of "too much efficiency."

Hey guys.

I have a good fic already written, and I was browsing through the posting rules to put it here

The con: It's written in spanish, and trying to get some reviews outside on small forums is hard and if they come they are usually scarce. I want more people to tell me what they think and help me to point out flaws in my writing.

What can I do since you guys never mention anything about fics in other languages? Anywhere I can put it?

Feel free to put it on the Training Grounds (it should be on the front page with a picture of Zecora this week) and just specify in your OP that it's in Spanish. If we can accommodate, we will!

So yes, it's your former suggestion, not the latter. Besides, the IRC is really just for the reviewers to hang out. I specifically stated that the main place to meet up with them is in the Training Ground's gdoc queue.

Am I wrong to assume you take pleasure in your hostility? I mean not to taint this most sacred of threads for a simple question, and apologise that I cannot replicate your post for it employs undocumented mark-up. But, perhaps it is not safe to assume that a pre-reader has the answers I seek, and given you have implied that you do, surely you could be so fair as to grace them upon me. If a sterile thread here is what you desire, closing this matter would be of mutual interest, no?

Before you rage and post the typical defense comments, please understand this a QUESTION and not a troll post, nor am i having a go at anyone , it merely is to sate my curiosity on this matter

I am curious. About the subjects of MLP fictional stories.
I am curious as to why exactly, for a cartoon about Friends and colourful magical adventures, that set out to teach good life lessons to the viewer and explore the wonderous nature of Friendships, seems to end up with two majorly reocurring themes in the writing world.

Sex and War (Or death) . I scroll through lists apon lists of stories on various fanfic sites and pages , and i am confronted by this sad fact over and over. And i wonder, what the obsession is , with these subject matters ?

Why is almost every person so hell bent on making such stories , especially the sexual fictions. Romance i can understand yes, but clopfics i cannot . And just as much so, the War and death stories. What compells writers to continously delve into this subject matter, when it is completely out of character with the show. I cannot see how someone can say they are in love with the show or its characters, and yet, proceed to destroy everything about it.

As i said , i am not angry or lambasting anyone for thier choice of story, everyone is free to write whatever they so wish about, after all if we were subject to just the canon, then it would be far too limited. I just wonder , why so much sex and death .

Yours sincerely - Vermillon : Author of Friendship is Tragic and some other Vulgar immature story. Oh and hypocrite (Though i stopped writing a long time ago)

Personally, most of the tags of my stories are usually either or a combination of Shipping, Adventure, Grimdark and Normal. Grimdark is my favorite, because it allows far more freedom; it sets apart every single border that the show put and let everything flow.

Personally, it's no different than writing a tragedic story, to be frank. Just because it's set in the MLP universe is quite frankly completely unrelated, and to associate our like for the show and the characters with our taste in books is quite frankly appalling.

I like writing Grimdark, and I like My Little Pony. So I combine the two.

You see this a lot. Take a show that ends tragically, you'll see dozens of lighter, happier retellings by fans. Neon Genesis Evegelion, for example, has 'Good End' stories out the wazoo.

Happy shows get darker fan interpretations, heavy and somber shows get lighter, fluffier explorations.

If it's done right, it's not destroying the characters, it's exploring another potential side of them. Of course, too often it's done wrong, but that's a matter of skill more than anything else.

A good writer needs to read.
A good reader can infer information.
It is so named because it's run by a pre-reader, but its purpose is open to any and all questions, even those tenuously related to the workings of /fic/. Worse yet, it is specifically stated that this is NOT the place for asking questions, so even if that thread wasn't the BEST place to do it, this thread is MOST CERTAINLY NOT. I am irritated because this is a case of you not exercising any form of independance, instead pestering me about something you don't need in a place you shouldn't be doing it when a suitable answer was already given.
Also, it's called ctrl-c+ctrl-v. It's how I remake this message every time. The only manual editing you would need to do is adding the Royal Canterlot Voice font, which anyone who's read the FAQ (which everyone should) knows how to do.

>>69749

Perhaps it would be wise to consider that even with your screaming demands against it people still ask questions in this thread? Do you know why this is, or are you being intentionally obtuse? It's because this is a sticky, the only sticky, in the /fic/ board, and that someone who wanted to ask questions pertaining to /fic/ in general is in a very comfortable position to assume that a sticky in a board is a good place to ask general questions about the board. The "Ask a pre-reder anything" thread does not adequately give any indication to being a valid substitute for this purpose.

And please, don't insult my intelligence or capacity to read—anyone who has been using computers for more than faxing their tax returns knows how to use copy-paste. Perhaps when I say "undocumented mark-up" you could notice that the method to produce the Royal Canterlot Voice is not in the FAQ; telling me my inability to obtain such information is a product of not being "independent enough" is rather annoying. (You appear to express some authority here, so being told there is information where there is not can result in quite tiresome scouring.) I guess you'll be forced to make another post then, because you neglected to part with that information as well.

So, what reason could you have for being so anal towards the request for such simple details? Your actions lend credence to my idea that you reviewers are some reclusive folk, and perhaps I would be best to just let you be since I appear not welcome here. I realise now these hoops are shaped with barbed wire and the teeth of children, and perhaps an attempt to clear them was not the wisest of decisions.

Synopsis: Apple Bloom, inspired by her comics, suggests that the Cutie Mark Crusaders should become spies, but Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle don't think much of the idea. This is Equestria, for Celestia's sake; a land where happiness is the default setting, and the word "enemy" is so rarely used it needs a good dusting.
But it seems that Apple Bloom's suggestion is timely; when weird events start occurring around Ponyville, it looks like they'll soon be up to their ears in mysteries. And who knows just how far they will have to go to unravel them...

Chapter to Review: "Ess-Pee-Own-Arge"

Comment/Request: Generally passed muster at Equestria Daily, but I'm highly concerned with Apple Bloom's accent. Any advice on how to represent Apple family accents in general? Also, I'm writing the next chapter, and I'm worried about style and presentation. Is this opening a little too "busy"? How is the pacing? Any feedback on either point will be incorporated into my next chapter.
I would like Midnight Shadow (recommended for new writers) or MintyRest (presentation) to review this first chapter, please.

No, it's not important because it's a thread that very few people use and produces very little content in the overall scheme of things (at least at this point in time; I won't deny it had a fair bit of traffick in its heyday).
If you feel the need to complain about it, do it in the IRC and leave this thread to its purpose. This isn't the place for you to be making mountains out of molehills.

Keep in mind I'm a high school student. This was already rejected by EQD. Before you read this, I'd like to go over somethings-

He's suffered major PTSD, and was trapped in one small area motionless for an extended period of time. it was only the will of a god that he's alive.

The explosion that happened in the middle that rendered Luna and Celestia powerless was not by him, but by the same god who trapped him. He's powerful, but not as strong as they are. He's an alicorn because the sage character, the Guardian, made him that way. He's capable of unicorn magic, but to a degree like that of Twilight. I could reveal so much more, but that would spoil the fun. ;)

An excellent suggestion. However, that's not possible without frequent mod interaction since the generals need to be updated with new iterations every few weeks. I've also proposed the idea of making the generals un-autosage-able or even having an entire page dedicated to the generals (think something like page -1), but neither have attracted much attention.
To be frank, the mods have promised a number of other updates to several boards and have yet to deliver on any of them. It's like dealing with the government: They make promises to earn your vote (and your silence), then drag their feet for every step of five consecutive marathons uphill through a foot-deep river of molasses on a cold January day.

Also, if you're planning on replying to this, please copy/paste the message above my reply or take your suggestions into the IRC where it can be discussed in real-time.

Hello.
I've never been to this website before, but I heard about it when I came to my idea about featuring my work(s) on Equestria Daily.
They recommended this website to send in my prior submission for review.
But you see, the layout of this site is (I intend no offense) very confusing, and maybe even unorganized.
So, I would really like some help in figuring out how to go about asking someone to review my prior submission, if you will.

Attention: I thought it would be good to put the sticky endpost in a public doc now:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iEeqrG_m5pUK4dliClxrzDrJdn_M0fy-LsGxKNjNhAg/edit?pli=1
That could be something mods could open and copy/paste from when informing users on other boards where to post about fanficiton. It would be especially helpful for staving off single-purpose "hey can you recommend me a good fanfic" threads. If you want to help maintain it, send an email to any of the TTG maintainers, listed here:
http://bit.ly/rWZr4z
I thought about making this publicly editable, but decided against it since we need the list of threads publicly available to mods (i.e. so they can post links to Recommendation General in threads that are basically “hey guise do you know if there are any good Octavia shipping fics” threads and then lock them) and allowing just anyone to edit could result in people putting in links to just anything.

Chapters to Review: Just the prologue
Comments (From an EqD Pre-Reader):
Sentences could flow together a little better in places. The very first pair, for instance.

Not a fan of that section/time break.

Having some trepidation about the insertion of these OCs into Ponyville, yet I don't feel like it's enough to hold this back.

I saw the note about the gangster's speech. It's... weird. I wouldn't hold this back for that either, but it does make it seem like everything he says is either emphasized or stilted, which is almost a mode of speech but doesn't quite work.

This is severely eh. It just feels slightly off, yet not enough to go, "Okay, here's what's wrong." Might need a second opinion; at this point, all I can suggest is ponychan for a review, with no specific angle to approach from, and a first chapter since this is just a prologue.

Comments/requests:
Here's the pre-reader's comment:
1) Inconsistent formatting.
2) Multiple grammatical errors.
3) Missing punctuation.
4) Tense changes.
5) Telling.

How can you fix these?

1) Either indent every paragraph or have no indentation
2) Go to ponychan and have it looked at.
3) Same as three.
4) Make sure everything is in the same tense.
5) Ponychan will point out these instances.

My comment:
I have gone through these chapters and corrected most of my mistakes and errors. I just want to be sure if there is anything i had missed.
