So who remembers/plays this series? In the past week I've found that two of my friends enjoy it and we started playing Heroes 3 online together. Maybe we can get more people to play with? I've played 3, 5, and 6, and will multiplay with anypony, but if you want to talk about the other games and join up for them go ahead. But leave the Might and Magic series out of it.

I've never played HOMM3 in multiplayer, but have you ever tried In the Wake Of The Gods mod?

I love 3 and on, but multiplayer has always felt slow. I might try out a game with people anyway if I wrangle them up again and get them running.

As a side note, 7 is announced and in production. Sounds like they're leaving out some major factions again, though, so I'm not sure what to think about it. I'm interested in seeing how it goes.

Yes!
Though as mods go, Heroes 5 is basically a much better version of 3 with startlingly few changes.

>>132188
Man, every installment there are fewer factions...
Then again, it's not like every faction in 3 was good...

I do miss the Dungeon a lot, though, as well as the Fortress.

So far in 7 they've got the Haven, Academy, Stronghold and Necropolis present, and they're letting people vote between the Sylvan and new Fortress that's got dwarves instead of lizard people, from 5. Why we have to choose one eludes my comprehension. It seems like it should be easy enough to put both in there. I assume the sixth faction is gonna be left up to a vote, too, and that worries me even more. What are we going to vote between, the Inferno and Sanctuary? Is it even possible to make a Heroes game without the Inferno?

And I do prefer 5 to 3, though a lot of people are diehard fans. 6 made some cool changes, but also some less cool changes. Like I enjoy that they've condensed the tiers a bit, but I also really miss war machines, and the randomness of level ups was actually pretty cool before. So it's harder for me to choose between 5 and 6, even without factoring in the missing factions.

Heroes 4 actually had some neat concepts, too, but as far as I'm concerned the completely ridiculous grid they used for combat kills the whole thing unquestionably.

Yeah, I feel kinda the same way about 5 and 6. 6 is fun, but every time I feel like I'm playing the same game since I always pick the best skills.
Btw, you know they re-added the dungeon in the Shades of Darkness expansion, right?

That's a bit of a different dungeon from 3, but I should check that out. I completely forgot.

Yeah, now they specialize in lingering damage. Blood aligned magic heroes can cast "Blood Implosion" which causes all the pending damage over time to happen all at once and multiplied.

I would play 3 if GOG would finally accept my debit gift card... thing and let me purchase it. ;_;

I should get an actual credit card soon because I really want to play it.

Yes, I play HoMM 3 (got that platinum edition thing with HoMM 1-3). Didn't really like part 4 and everything after it.

I still play HoMM 1 and 3 up to this day, so if anypony feels like playing, we can arrange something.

Really, you didn't like 5? It was basically a huge redo of heroes 3.
>> No. 132456
>>132445
5 was okay-ish, but nowhere near as addicting as 3.

I miss all the opulent maps with tons of locations to visit and treasure/artifacts to collect. The maps in 5 just seem so empty in comparison.

Apart from that I didn't like how much of an unfair advantage the AI had (building structures for free and stuff like that) and that it needed a ridiculous amount of time to make its move at some point. To me that's just lazy programming.
Fans had to create a patch of their own to make the AI competitive without giving it huge benefits and/or taking forever to move.
>> No. 132464
>>132456
Ah, I can definitely understand that, the AI is near instant in 3. One thing that bothered me about 5 is that all the flavor text from 3 was gone, get a chest or a stat-boosting thing or an artifact and you don't get any explanation or anything, just a notification that your stats went up. Curious though, did you play the Tribes of the East expansion? Giving an alternate upgrade to every single creature makes a HUGE difference in how you play and replayability.
>> No. 132466
>>132464
Yeah, I played Tribes of The East and I completely agree that the two choices for every creature upgrade were an interesting addition that gave the game a lot more depth and replayabilty.

And, admittedly, once I had installed the fan patch that completely reworked the AI, taking away all of its advantages over the player, making it move way faster and play smarter in general, I couldn't complain about that anymore.

The main reason I prefer 3 is the general structure of the maps. Especially in the early phases of a game there's so much to explore, so much treasure to collect and so many locations to visit that it's hard to decide where to send your heroes.

HoMM 5 maps are usually a lot more linear with not as much stuff to collect and not as many forks in the road. Random Maps do a decent job, but are still not as good.

Naturally I can't deny that there's a certain nostalgia factor to HoMM 3 as well that probably influences me, but it's just one of those games that I keep coming back to (I just wish some fans would improve the AI in that game too).

Wait, there's a fan patch that does all that??

And I kinda thought the same about 3 as well, but really once I started playing it again, all the problems that 5 fixed were right up in my face and I couldn't get back into it. 9 factions is great, but when 2 are shit and the rest have balance issues, it can be kind of annoying. Also caravans, I looove caravans.

There sure is. If you're interested in giving it a shot, you can download it here:
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/595753-New-%28unofficial%29-enhanced-AI-for-Heroes-5-ToE-3-1-Forums
Installing and running it is simple. The readme explains everything.

>once I started playing it again, all the problems that 5 fixed were right up in my face
True, 3 does have some issues that I wish were fixed. There is a fanmod for it, making it possible to run the game fullscreen on 16:9 monitors along with a bunch of other changes (e.g. more spells per page in the spellbook, so you can select them faster, seeing how far an enemy creature can move by moving the cursor on it, etc), but sadly it doesn't fix everything.

Hah yes, get enough vampires and they just revive themselves constantly.

...Unless you have to fight gargoyles, golems, elementals, or lava dragons -_-

my friends used to get mad at me because I would remove all but one or two stacks from the battle and still win it flawlessly

they would use their whole armies and constantly have units dying here and there

Something else I really like about 5, being able to leave stacks out of battle :)

Fucking brilliant games.

Played 3 and 4 to death with my friends... had hoped see Age of Wonders revive that lost glory, alas it feels off and a lot less fun to me.

It is, to the best of my memory, the first PC game I've ever played. HoMM3 anyways.

I couldn't remember the name of it actually, and had to try and describe the game aesthetics to somepony to try and remember the name of it. GoG was having a sale at the time, so it worked out well.

Not just that, but Titans deal bonus damage to Black Dragons while (unlike with every other instance of that) the dragons don't reciprocate. That's why I call them racist :P

Oh shush, it's not like dungeon was close to the most overpowered faction in that game, the fact that tower could hand their asses to them with a few of their units didn't mean jackshit as literally all of dungeon's units were murderously good.

An HD edition of HoMM 3 will be released this month.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/297000/

Apart from the looks and a new online mode there won't be any changes though. The desperately needed AI improvement and rebalancing are still missing.

Also, there's a fanpatch that does the exact same thing, so I doubt Ubisoft put too much thought or research into this edition.

Yikes, nevermind.

Turns out the HD edition was even more of a cash-in than I thought.
