So I'm playing Final Fantasy 1 for some light critique and examination (for reasons). Goin' in with a party of Fighter, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, because I have no reason to believe the Thief does anything and the Red Mage is presumably sorta gimped. Could be way off on that, but that's the vibe I got from their descriptions. Not really sure how the Monk and Fighter are different either, to be honest, but hopefully I'll find that out while playing.

First order of business and the reason I'm making this post and taking notes: Battle diversity. I'm gonna record all the different battles in the first zone and what I had to do to beat them to see what sort of variety I'm dealing with. I've already done a couple battles, screenshot included, but we'll get to that in the next post. You ready? 'cause I'm ready. Booyah.

So the first two battles I did:

Goblin x 3 : Attacked with all my dudes. Took minimal damage.
Goblin x 5: Attacked with all my dudes. Took minimal damage.

At this point in the game, even the mages are usually able to one shot a goblin with their weapons. The physical characters don't even have non-fight options, and the mages can only really cast a couple spells before running out of MP (though their MP more than doubled at their first level up).

So far all I've seen are goblins. Usually in the 5 pack.

Got my ass kicked by a Crazy Horse. Straight up killed Koko. She's got like 0 health. Her most recent level only gave her one hit point! When these other people get like 30! Either way, that horse is dangerous stuff and I might need to do something other than Fight it.

I've still only found the one Crazy Horse battle so I can't test any new strategies. It's been goblins and goblins and goblins, in packs of 3-5. I did find Goblin Guards or something once, which were a different color, but they weren't really any different, they still went down in one hit and did no damage, so...I guess I'm grateful for the 50% higher XP?

I just hope there's a church/inn in this town, 'cause I had gotten so bored with things thus far that I was holding down the A and Speed buttons to slog through it and I wasn't paying attention to my hit points. Both mages are down.

The melee dudes actually went on without them. Not too much trouble still, 'cause they weren't contributing a whole lot.

Red Mage isn't really gimped. Once you get the Judgement Staff to cast flares, there's no reason to have a Black Mage instead of a Red one.

edit. I'm thinking of the Anniversary edition. I don't know if red mages can equip it in the Dawn of Souls edition.

You will probably alternately love and hate your monk as you go. Fighter is straight lovable but they need a bit of funding.

The black and white mage come in handy pretty soon when you have to fight undead. Trying to go at those fights without at least one strong caster option is extremely tough.

I don't know how you're getting extra XP but it sounds like its making the game a breeze. EZ mode. Not that it was super difficult but from what I recall you're having an easier time than you should be.
>> No. 133435
Also try alternating the monks weapons and bare fisted (no weapon) fighting. Later in the game I think getting 6 hits in one fight round isn't uncommon when fighting without a weapon.

Well I was getting extra XP because I was sort of unintentionally grinding by just trying to find as many different random battles combinations as possible. I'll probably hop back in later tonight and continue my logs.

Though when last I left off I did eventually die in some cave 'cause I just couldn't figure out where I was going and eventually I got worn down by the masses and masses of enemies I had to slog through.

Which, hey, that's better than the first part of the game was.

Okay, I picked me up some Poisona this time 'cause that cave has whole tons of poison to deal with in it. I'm still a bit worried about running out of MP, though, especially on Koko. Okay, I'm out. Lots of variety in enemies down there, but strategy was still almost entirely just using the Fight command. I pulled out Koko for the green ooze 'cause magic was way more effective than physical attacks, and I didn't really have the opportunity to do anything else because attempting more than that would've run me out of mana. The Piscodemon boss fight (I assume it was that) was very painful, but ultimately came down to my fighter using Fight, my white mage using Cure, and waiting out the battle. Koko probably would've contributed a lot, had she lived.

Going into a dungeon and realizing after one fight you maybe can't handle another like that before getting out.

Is Maudin fighting bare fisted yet?

It looks like level 10 he gets additional attacks unarmed but thats just people in a forum talking. So if the attack power of him with a weapon looks higher than the attack power of him unarmed, test to see if he isn't getting extra hits to compensate.

So far, combat has been incredibly simple. No matter how many different combinations show up, of which there has been a lot, I have two options. Hold down A to use the Fight command, and use Koko to cast Fira.

If the Red Mage keeps Fira, I retain that it is better than the Black Mage. If it does not, I don't think I can give it up.

Okay, if I follow this all correctly...

The Mirage Tower is sealed and no one knows how to get in there except the sky people who speak a language no one knows except for this one guy who would totally be able to translate it if he has the Rosetta Stone from the shrine that sank to the bottom of the ocean that I could reach in a barrel based submarine if I had some "oxyale".

Also there's a fairy of some sort at this caravan that I can purchase to return to her lake way over in the last city, and there's something shiny at a waterfall north of here.

And I guess that's it. Final Fantasy 1, barring some extra content added in the GBA version, laid out for both I and anypony reading the thread to see. Did I discover what I set out to determine? Yes.

25 hours of random encounters and 80% of them were solved by selecting the Fight command until combat ended. The other 20% were solved by one party member casting Fira. Bosses were cleared by casting Haste on the Fighter and Monk. There were no real exceptions to this. Healing was done almost entirely out of combat, spell damage paled in comparison to physical attacks, a full quarter of spells went unpurchased, and a lot of the ones I did purchase were so worthless they went unused. My most used spells, outside of Healara and Fira, were utility spells. Though I only managed to actually make use of the Exit spell once, despite the many many time prior to getting it that I would've loved to have it. Verdict:

The game has no diversity at all. And what's worse, it pours battles on top of you almost non-stop towards the end of the game. If I wasn't playing at over 10x speed I don't think I would've even made it all the way through because the game is just so boring.

And with that said, I'm still somewhat interested in playing it again, to try out different combinations of members. I feel like my party was far from optimal given how things played out. Adding more monks for offense, or more fighters for defense, or red mages for the ability to cast all the useful spells without giving up weapons and armor, or just seeing what the thief can do, if anything, kind of makes me want to play through it again. Without getting lost this time, either, so I wasn't so ridiculously over leveled that even the final boss went down in maybe 10 turns and couldn't keep up with my mediocre healing.

In short, the entirety of your combat strategies are chosen from the very beginning of the game, leaving the rest of the game an endless slog through boredom, but that first part where you name your party and choose what you're doing is neat enough for me to give this game two stars out of five.

It's the darkest game in the series this side of Kefka and Jenova's bodycount.

There's a bit more strategy in combat than just picking attack or magic and hitting the emulator turbo button to speed through each fight.

Your magic and physical attacks level individually based on use. You have to decide which character to specialize in which attribute. Also, battle rows were introduced.

You know, it's interesting to me that numbers have inflated so much over the years. I'm not sure there's a good reason to have done that. Like in Final Fantasy 1 (or the version I just played, at least) health capped out at 1000, damage sometimes exceeded 1000, but was nowhere near reaching an actual limit. Then later things started capping at 10k. Then in FFX we decided that wasn't enough either, so now things cap at 100k. What was wrong with dealing like 1000 damage? Does Final Fantasy have to pretend to be Disgaea to compete?

The strangest bit to me is that you break the first limit and then still hit the second limit. Like if you're ever not hitting the limit you're just inferior and doing it wrong. There's no range for damage. Just you are doing 99999 damage, or you're not doing it right.

That's what I mean, it shouldn't be an option. Damage should remain within reasonable limits, so one person dealing 5000 can be more impressive than the one dealing 4000. Instead everypony just deals 10k and the key to more damage is whoever naturally has more attacks. So Cloud, or Wakka, or Squall.

Now, to level up abilities quickly, you can have your party beat each other up repeatedly.

Since I gave Sakaki a spear instead of using her pre-programed bow proficiency, and since Gordon is a self-admitted coward, I'm sticking him in the back and making him the team bowman.

Only problem is it's tricky to build up his HP, since enemies don't usually target him and having my own party members attack him to level his HP will kill him in one hit.

I 1-hit killed the Behemoth in the Coliseum (the white magic teleport spell is pretty useful when sufficiently leveled. Even against bosses), but that chickenshit Emperor ran away like a pussy.

Now, the difficulty spikes with the baddies in the dungeon.

Got Ultima (RIP, Minwu).

Dang, I forgot what a pain leveling that spell is. I only got Holy a little while before and it's doing three times the damage than ultima does after two hours of grinding.

2 is one of those merciless difficulty games that beating is a satisfying badge of honor,
like Contra and the Ninja Gaidens. True, the fights are pretty easy with enough grinding, but even then, it's easy to be caught off guard by the difficulty curve. Like I said, I 1-hit killed the Behemoth boss, and the very next fight, in the Coliseum Dungeon, three of my guys got turned to stone on the first hit and only Sakaki's magic defense level kept her alive. She then got hit by stop, which stunned her for several turns and barely survived to take out the enemy mages and get some breathing room to heal and revive the others.

Ricard is quite a badass.

The first Dragoon in the series. Kain from FFIV and Cid from FFVII are both based on him.

He goes out like a badass on par with Galuf or Tellah.

I've got him learning Axe, Bloodsword and the Drain and Osmose spells to help him survive in the afterlife.

Explains why they feel like they are minted from the same character.

Does he stomp a hole in the main villain's ass even after he's technically dead through the power of love alone?

Then no, he's not as badass as Galuf.

You've got to admire the spirit (no pun intended) of these people.

They're trapped in what may be hell, under siege from hellspawn and they persevere and set up a nice little village complete with a pub and inn.
