I actually stumbled on a bit of info about such boxes recently. Turns out they sometimes have this feature even if they're not technically supposed to (because the TV provider would rather upsell you on this instead with a box with inbuilt memory, but actually disabling it is oh-so-haaaaaaard), just gotta plug something with a decent amount of memory in there and it gets enabled. I was always under the impression he was one of the relatively widely recognized ones, obviously not as recognizable as T. Rex or Triceratops.. but perhaps.. Ankylosaurus tier. Not to mention it was featured in the third Jurassic Park, albeit in an incredibly inaccurate manner, so I thought that would've boosted it's popularity. Then again I've always been an enthusiast of this kind of thing so there's also that to consider. Nonetheless it was an intriguing documentary, we've learned a lot of interesting things about it and have answered a lot of the questions that have been mostly unverifiable as 'conclusively' as you can in paleontology - so, a great find indeed!

Honestly most of my exposure to dinosaurs over the years has been various general developments like "so yeah, they actually totally had feathers as a general rule" and some discussion about their kinda-extinction ("kinda" because technically there's still the birds). Perhaps it's built-in? Is that a possibility with modern TVs? Though that doesn't feel right considering my old out-dated TV ran the same way. I'll look into it sometime, I"m curious now.

It's fair, I just thought because of Spinosaurus' appearance in JP and unique features that it was a little more of a household name than I expected. The coolest thing is, as odd as it looks, it's all for good reason. It's an extremely specialized carnivore, and it's adaptations are what allowed it to co-exist in Africa during the Cretaceous period where carnivores were absolutely everywhere. It was better adapted to hunting fish (which isn't as unimpressive as it sounds, we're talking 26 foot long sawfish here) and so it wasn't required to compete with predators like Charcharodontosaurus and various other threats as it managed to feed on a completely different type of prey instead. It's also likely the reason it had the giant sail, paired with it's large size (it is the largest theropod discovered thus far) making it tower over what would otherwise be genuine threats in it's environment.

Anyway, I'm digressing.. but it's really one of my favorites so I couldn't resist..

Don't even get me started on how quick the media is to jump on ideas, I just recently watched a video 'news report' about how Stegosaurus 'aimed for the crotch!' based on one Allosaurus specimen found with an impaled pelvis. First of all, this just tells us that this particular individual was nailed in that area and nothing about what it means as a whole - and secondly it wasn't really 'the crotch' but rather 'the legs', which makes perfect sense for a Stegosaurus to go for since a broken leg on a theropod is pretty much a guaranteed death.

But the find came from the infamous Robert T. Bakker who, as iconic as he is, is not above over-exaggerated and contrived attempts at establishing patterns in dinosaur behavior. He's also responsible for the controversial 'T. Rex was a scavenger' theory that everyone is adamantly against, though I confess I do personally believe he's right - or at least an ambush predator that would occasionally scavenge. Opportunistically anyway.

..and I'm digressing again.. I guess it goes without saying that I'm kind of pretty into this subject.. heh. Point is the media is really quick to just take whatever a paleontologist says and run with it, usually without even attempting to check facts or get a second opinion. Spinosaurus was very front-heavy, it wouldn't have been able to fully support itself on it's hind legs so it likely walked on all fours - but it's wrists couldn't rotate to face palm-down, so it had more of a knuckle-dragging posture. Additionally it's legs were pretty short compared to most theropods, so it's proportions were just unusual - but of course it makes sense considering it was adapted for an amphibious lifestyle.
