Hello there.

I'd like to welcome you to the latest iteration of The Story Thread. Take a seat, say hi, read some stories if you like, but y'all best behave yourselves now. And remember to have fun every now and then. Not too much fun, though, that's just silly.

Got some stories below, take a look:

Much better than last night. A close friend and I talked about a few things that are completely unrelated to that incident, and I realized a few other things about myself. I rely WAY too much on emotion for a lot of my decisions. The kind of person I've become in recent years actually disgusts me a little bit. Like, I don't know if I'm okay with who I am.

Or rather, who I was until earlier today. I am taking a whole new outlook on life, and I am excited to see what happens.

Yeaaaah, I get that.

I dicked around for 2 years and had a GPA of about 2.8.
Last year I was heavy in depression and my GPA was like, 1.7. My spring semester was 2 withdrawn 3 Fs.

Buuut turning things around and all, got psychiatric help, managed to realize why things were going poorly and things I could do to get rid of that sort of crap, and thanks to a good summer semester my GPA is now at a 2.0 and I'll be able to get rid of the Spring semester if things pan out like they likely will.

yeah, I suppose I would have enjoyed history too if they taught us interesting things. Learning about how this leader made a poor decision, or how so many people died in this other battle that didn't affect me got boring after a while. The most interesting bit I remember from history class is that Alexander the great used tactics to defeat armies ten times that of his own. It was the way in which he won the battles that impressed me a lot.

What I really wish I'd learned about is that most of the iron used in the Civil war came from New Jersey, and that the two largest ironworks are right in my hometown. Seriously, I've climbed on both of them. They're massive, and I would have loved to learn in history that those things turned out the majority of the iron used in rifles and musketballs and stuff. That would have been so cool to know.

I don't find that stuff boring at all.

I particularly like military history, or American history and its contextual application to modern society. It's the small stuff that interest me.

Like how coffee became a mainstay because people were so furiously anti-british and needed a new caffeinated drink.

Or how the American 'Melting Pot' that people use as a symbol of diversity was actually a systematic use of the military to 'melt' other cultures into Americanism, effectively nationalizing immigrants and removing their prior ties to nationality.

Or how during World War 1 the first American unit to fight the enemy was an African American one.
Or how Patton actually led an all-black tank corp and was so well respected and respected his soldiers to the point where they still have his picture hanging in their hall today.

Or how less than 1% of Wall Street was Jewish in the 1930s.

Or how Woodrow Wilson wrote his college thesis on how the British Parliament was superior to the American congressional system and was downright obsessed with the British and completely ignored British transgressions against the United States prior to World War 1 (Which were as bad if not worse than Germany's)

Or how Teddy Roosevelt was the origin of the Teddy Bear

Or stuff like that. Things some people know and some people don't.
I love history.

I'd rather learn about more interesting stuff. I know I sound like Rainbow Dash and her "cool" dress right now but like... Science. Science fascinates me because while the overall effect is sometimes boring, when you get down into the details, the simplest things are just astounding. Like the liquid rope coil effect. Scientists don't understand it after fifty years of studying, but there it is, and it's so simple. That kind of stuff fascinates me. Water turns into a ball in space because of surface tension. WE DON'T KNOW WHY GRAVITY EXISTS!! Why do two objects with no physical connection experience a net force toward each other without any outside interaction? How do they know the other one is even there? I love simple mindblowing facts. it's why I love science, because it can explain these simple little things no one even thinks about. Did you know that trees are made of carbon they pull from the air? That's why they take in CO2 and release O2. they take the carbon and add it to their mass. That's cool. Tell me more.

History is just "These guys didn't like eachother so they fought like children. It was bloody."
At least, that's what most high schools teach.

History in school is basically a story of "How we got where we are today" in as simplified a way as possible.
Actually studying history is far more interesting.

Did you know during the American Civil War some officials from Britain were sent over to observe the battles, and they were horrified by what they saw.
During the napoleonic wars, if an enemy platoon charged at you, you ran away.
During the Civil War everyone refused to run away and instead fought to the death, that's why it was so bloody.

That's because the French and British were pussies.

Joking aside, during the Civil War, people always claim that the British were going to side with the Confederates because of the sheer amount of cotton and trading relations with the British.

But it ignores the fact that American manufacturing in the NORTH was equally important and if anything was more important. Grain.

Pearl Harbor wasn't a surprise. No, I don't mean they intercepted the Japanese communications, everyone knew that.
The American military had spent 40 years reinforcing the Philippines and Hawaii from attack.
7 years prior to Pearl Harbor, during war games, a naval commander (accurately) predicted that the attack would come from the north and by carrier.
Nothing was done, and in the end that's exactly what happened.

Also, a reason Pearl Harbor was so successful was because the people in charge of the base had expected Japanese sabotage. They put the planes wing-tip to wing-tip, which is excellent in case of sabotage because it's easier to guard and if something's wrong it's easier to tell, but in the case of bombings, it's that much worse.

The Japanese commander in charge of the pacific stated that if they did not beat the Americans within 6 months that they would have already lost.

The Americans produced more tanks during World War 2 than everyone combined sans the soviets. The soviets produced more tanks, but the Americans produced almost half of the world's aircraft during WW2.

General Patton, the famous tank commander initially got into armored combat not because he felt tanks were the wave of the future, but he saw the establishment of an armored division as a fast-track to promotion. He was right.

Teddy Roosevelt asked to regain his position as a Colonel during WW1 but was refused by Wilson, who was mad at him. Though there was also a more logical reason.
Prior to WW1 combat was largely easy and did not require anything but leadership.

Tactics and strategy had evolved to such a point during the first World War that officer training was mandatory in order to not get everyone killed.

The French almost defeated Germany in WW2. If they had actually managed one maneuver faster and more effectively, the German armored column would have collapsed and been forced to surrender, and Germany would have lost the war then and there. They would have literally lost all of their armor.

Nukes were actually the least damaging thing Americans dropped on Japanese soil. Certain parts of Japan reached 99% destruction because of firebombs, and the casualties reach anywhere from 300,000 to a million.
The official records only have about 300,000, but it's important to note that these records were taken during the war when morale was important.

The American decision to nuke Japan was in part due to fears that the Soviets would invade Japan and split it akin to Germany. This was ridiculous, the Soviets had absolutely no way to get troops across.

>>1641275
The British war plan in WW2 was 'pucker your anus until America gets involved'. This was partly because Roosevelt was in constant contact with Churchill and desperately sought a reason to join the war and help.

Also interesting that after studying the American Civil War for five years, all of Europe immediately forgot about it the instant the Franco-Prussian war broke out, retroactively scoffing at the dumb Americans who were so unprofessional they took cover in trenches rather than stay in formation.

When World War I broke out, Europe assumed it would be a second Franco-Prussian war, not anything like the Civil war.

Long story short? We got the Louisiana Purchase, but that was more the French Republic's fault.

To understand what happened in Louisiana, you have to understand what happened in Hati.

Hati at the time was 90% slaves, 2% rich free blacks, 7% poor whites and 1% French aristocrats. It was by far France's richest colony. When the French revolution broke out and all these fancy words of liberty and equality started spreading, the poor whites felt really oppressed by their horrible aristocratic masters. They figured they could secure liberty, equality and fraternity for everyone (that wasn't the 92% of the island that was black, naturally) if only they killed the aristocrats like they did in mother France.

Long story short, they did, and the SURPRISE! Slave rebellion. Napoleon tried to do some things to fix it after he took power, but everything was totally fucked and the former slaves ran everything. Without France's most important colony, what use was the big stretch of empty land right next to America? Money was much more useful.

So in this way, America more than doubled in size.

The Americans used what they called the Tank Destroyer Doctrine, rather than use tanks with big guns to blow up tanks, they used tanks to support infantry during assaults.
A tank destroyer is basically a tank without a turret, and a large gun mounted directly onto the hull. It's not a very strong offensive weapon, but very good at defence. The Americans primarily used these, coupled with infantry armed with bazookas, to destroy enemy tanks.
This backfired against them really since the Americans primarily played offensively throughout WW2.

Since the Germans were working towards their Blitzkrieg doctrine they needed offensive vehicles able to destroy any tank the enemy could throw at them, hence their penchant for building heavier and heavier tanks.

The StuG in particular was amazing, and the Panzer IV was alright. The Panther, although regarded as the best tank of the war, actually had a rather large amount of flaws.

In several recorded cases Panthers lost to Shermans due to the fact that they were fucking garbage on anything that wasn't long open fields.

Doctrine was what won it for the Allies. They went for the reliable and tactical over the small powerful few.

Hell, even that aside, the Panther was an overproduced piece of garbage compared to the British Firefly. It had better armor, but not a better gun and the Firefly essentially meant that the "five shermans for every panzer" rule went out the fucking window. That thing was designed to murder tanks.

>>1641298
Napoleon needed money. Badly.
So he made a deal with Jefferson.

>>1641302
>It's not a very strong offensive weapon
Like hell. Tank Destroyers were fucking amazing at what they aimed to do. Just they were a little overproduced if anything.

The M10 also DID have a turret. American TD's typically did.

Yes, America got a huge chunk of land because a bunch of french people on an island thought that the french revolution should apply to them too, since they were french. They ignored the fact that when you're outnumbered 9 to 1 by slaves who hate you and want you dead, you can't afford to fight a civil war.

And yes, the ship in Sahara.

>>1641295
There was the Tetrarch, I guess. The Japanese tried it with the Ku-Ro, the Soviets tried it with the A-40 (which looked really silly since it was a tank with a pair of wings strapped to it) and later on the Soviets managed to develop a way to airdrop a BMP APC into battle with a full squad.

>>1641302
Notably, the Americans developed a lot of tank destroyers with turrets, mitigating the issue somewhat, but still being far from ideal.

Don't forget, American TD's beyond gun-carriages were god damn amazing.

The M18 could go 60 MPH and penetrate anything from the front. They were actually able to fight Panthers head on simply because they were GOOD.

I wish I had my little bro's knowledge of tanks right now. He's a HUGE tank enthusiast. He actually plays WorldofTanks because they use real stats from real tanks, and he leads teams to massive victories. They weren't THAT good. I mean they COULD because they had a 76mm, but not often.

>>1641311
>Isn't that just, you know, a tank?
Not precisely. It comes down to their intended purpose and equipment. They were exceptionally mobile and had light armor, but heavy guns.

>If you have it sit back and provide firing support sure, but if you have it moving through a city in urban warfare or something it's something of a sitting duck.
Urban warfare was really rare. And even then, that's actually where German vehicles such as the PzIV and the Panther suffered the most. Shermans were extremely good in urban environment because of their relative profile and the sheer number of them.

The only problem with the Hellcat was that it had virtually no armor.

Which would have been a problem against the American tanks with high numbers and poor penetration, but against some of the German guns, not much armor would have saved you anyways, so who cares?

>>1641311
Nope! It's all in implementation and usage. American TDs were designed with the lessons of France in mind and were designed to defend against Blitzkreig.

So they assumed that German tanks would break through their defensive AT screen and wreak havoc on their rear formations.

In order to counter this, tank destroyers were designed to be super fast and heavily armed, deployed in reserve to hunt down the tanks running amok in the back line when Blitzkreig happened.

Turns out that during the war Blitzkreig didn't really happen much to the Americans, so the tanks were designed for a purpose that didn't really exist.

Since the two conceptions of tank destroyers were developed independently by America and Europe, it would probably be best to make them their own category of "hunter killer tanks" but we're stuck with the two being combined.

The concept of gender was invented in the 50s and 60s under really really shady circumstances. Apparently everywhere but the Anglosphere and Sweden told the idea to fuck right off, but here we are with different words for what hormones you have and what, I dunno, your soul is or whatever.

Well, it is of course a thing. But transsexual people here means that it is people who'd rather be a different sex.
I can understand that very well.

However, I think that the idea of social acceptance towards personal behaviour, likes or dislikes should not be gender based.

I don't see gender identity as a bad thing. But it wouldn't be a thing if ancient gender-role thinking a la "Boys should behave one way and girls another" wouldn't exist. That's all.

>>1641506
Ah that explains a lot of things.
I just read that actually the wish for being the opposite sex was still considered a psychotic disorder in some countries around that time, like the US for example. So I understand the need now to make it a thing to make people understand that it isn't one.

Censorship, like many things, can never truly die.

Ah well. It's still a good movie either way, and the electrocution death is arguably more gruesome anyways. It also lends itself to a little dramatic fun: The Joker dies, both in the past and present, to electrocution. Kinda like bookends, in a way.

I thought it might be funny. Except, of course, the reality is that we are in debt, and due to my debts and my family in general, I need to get some stable income to help contribute, otherwise we are kinda of screwed. And since our lifestyle is something we really, really don't want to give up since it keeps us sane in a relatively stressful life, I need to be getting that cash-money, preferably in a job well suited for a Physics degree. I also need to keep my skills sharp when it comes to programming.

School debt. Not student loans, mind you, I have those under control. But as it turns out, some stupid shit happened that I can't really confirm or deny because it happened years ago, and the school says I owe them about $5k.

Again, not in loans, just "You have to give us five thousand dollars."

I have no idea what I'm going to do. If I don't start getting more hours, I won't be able to afford rent at the same time as food, much less some huge bill from school that I didn't know I had.

I did tell them that. Unfortunately they have literally all information on whether or not I owe them money and I have no proof otherwise. I'm not even sure I actually don't owe them money. I may have legitimately overlooked some bullshit clause that they wrote in, or filled out paperwork wrong somewhere. Hello Clarity!

>>1641832
Don't sigh, it's a good vector! Could be used in a flash animation, although, I'm not sure what kind.

>>1641833
Heh, well, I'm sure it might suit me, except that relatives are already sort of struggling with dependency on it, and while it might possibly fit me if done responsibly, I couldn't legally use it where I live, and the one time I was able to legally try it...didn't work. I guess that's what happens when I go for the edible kind, or something.

And then, there's the fact that my name is almost too perfect if we ever wanted to open a dispensary, heh.

Well, what happened (according to them) is that I when I withdrew from my classes one semester, part of my loans were withdrawn as well. This does actually match up with my loans once I look at it. The only question is whether they actually should have been withdrawn. And I can't remember when or if I actually withdrew. I have a feeling I messed up my buttons somewhere and it didn't go through or something.

As far as I know, withdrawal should either also remove the costs of the class, or, at least, not take back my loans, but it does look like that's what happened.

but what to eat? This is my dilemma. I've never not known what I was hungry for before. I've always listened to my body, and it's told me what it was hungry for. Now all I'm hearing is "Mouth! Pain! Don't put food in here!"

Yeah, all attacks need to be deliberate and timed, which is where the challenge comes from in Monster Hunter. Being able to read and manipulate the movement of the monsters so that you line up as much attacks as possible before dodging out is where the fun really is. Lance and shield is a tricky one to use, it's very slow on the movement, meaning you have to right on top of the monster (or most times, under them!) and the key to attacking is to keep up a certain rhythm, while sidestepping and blocking attacks. The real key to the Lance is the counter-attack: Time it so you trigger that one before the monster hits you, and you'll not take damage, while doing a pretty powerful stab. Here, let me show you some good lance play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l63sBcfdMT8

Panic attack?

I mean, 130's not unusually high. Mine usually hits 140 when I run, but I have a resting heart rate of 85-90 bpm, so I dunno how much of a gauge mine is.

Alright, switching it up, I'm gonna listen to old staple of music to listen to: Classic EuroDance!
http://www.di.fm/classiceurodance

Also, I'm setting up a Mumble server for our (possible) future use, because I can, and maybe people would like a reliable voice chatroom at times. Or maybe that's just me. But hey, would anyone be interested in that? Let me know, I'd love to know if it might be a thing people might use. I'm a bit nervous asking, it sounds weird, I'm not weird for thinking it's a good idea am I? I might be, haha

Oh, what kind of machinery? Also, the Mumble thing isn't setup just yet, I'm still wondering how many people might even be interested, so I can set a sort of upper limit to the number of connections. I'm actually not even sure how much my bandwidth will be be able to handle, so...I guess I'd need to be conservative on how many to allow.
