And it's dumb! Right now the AAA games industry revolves around pumping all of their money into a trailer so that they can trick their consumers into thinking they're playing an industry changing game, all so that they can release an incomplete product and then whittle all of the money out of the consumer they can. And then they take that money and do the same process over again.

They don't see it from that perspective. AAA titles are expensive and there is a lot of competition. A single flop could probably ruin them. I'm not agreeing with the methods, not at all, but he's desperate to create demand.

Meanwhile, their employees work in conditions similar to sweatshops to make their games, clocking in 60 hour weeks with little to no overtime pay just to meet their game per year schedules. And those same employees, particularly QA folks, often have unemployment to look forward to once the game is shipped.

Ubisoft is pretty awful, which is unfortunate because I really like the idea behind Assassin's Creed.

The AAA industry is honestly shit and hardly ever puts out a game I would ever really want to play. Like just every "major" title ever falls completely flat for me. I am not interested in almost a single franchise out there. They offer nothing that is actually entertaining to me, and then there's piles of bugs and costs on top of all that.

>>1651968

With that out of the way, no, I don't think that sounds evil at all. In fact, I might even consider that benevolent, to the contrary. Putting out more content for a game? That's something people absolutely want. If it were possible, back in the day, to release more levels for Super Mario World or Zelda or Doom, or toss in an extra character you could play as, I think it would've had as big a market then as it does now, and I don't really see why people would ever be opposed to DLC. Like, it's a completely optional thing in most cases, and it's usually pretty awesome and well priced. It just doesn't compute to me that people would consider DLC "evil" in any way. Like it's honestly one of the best things about modern gaming, in my opinion.

>Putting out more content for a game? That's something people absolutely want.

This is why modding is such a big thing. In the Super Mario World community there are thousands of player-made levels, dozens of full game conversions, and so on. The Zelda community has a few big rom hacks, too, mostly for aLttP and OoT, and Doom's modding community is similarly large (compared to SMW's).

That's a pretty good reason to be opposed to some DLC, though. Why should you pay money for something that the fandom is content to make and distribute themselves?

And that makes sense in the way that maybe you wouldn't purchase DLC because fans are making stuff you can use for free. But to consider companies evil for doing so? I mean, if we extend that thought process, buying a major company's game at all is a bad idea because you can get tons of cheaper indie games, or outright free games online. And, indeed, some people do that, but I don't feel like those people would even care about DLC anymore.

But a business going "Yes, we want our customers to buy more stuff." is just like the opposite of evil.

A lot of the time these the DLC is all on the disc.
You aren't buying more content you are buying a code that changes a zero to a one and then allows you to play the content already on the disc.

Is that actually frequent? Like, I don't buy hardly any games on discs to begin with, but for the ones I have (and also the ones I haven't) DLC always includes a download of some kind. I've only heard about on-disc DLC in one incident with Call of Why Did Anyone Pay For This In the First Place.
