I just finished my first year of Japanese (as you can tell i'm not proficent with kanji yet), but I scored a high first on it (this semester I got marks over 90 for three of the tasks)

7/4にマイリットルポニーフレンドシップイスマジックはイギリスのテレビをみます. I don't have access to a dictionary ATM so I just said I'm gonna watch FiM instead of it's being broadcasted on the 4th of July.

I had a feeling this would be subbed in Japanese sooner or later, and wow, four episodes already!

One thing I was curious about was what pronouns the ponies would use. It looks like Twilight and Fluttershy use "watashi" which seems to fit. "Watakushi" fits Rarity perfectly, as does "boku" for Rainbow Dash. I guess "watashi" for Pinkie Pie is okay, but I'm not too sure about "atashi" for Applejack. Isn't that a bit girly for her, no offense? Spike used "oira" which I've pretty much never heard, so I'm not sure how well that works.

Do you know how to get ahold of him? His subtitles seem good overall, but he doesn't seem very up to speed on recognizing sarcasm and doesn't seem familiar with most of Applejack's cowboy slang. Like, in Ep3 he translates "Woah Nelly!" as "なにすんだ　バカ！"

This's probably too late to bump but oh well.
It's really tricky to translate AJ's southern accent or talking the way it is into JPNese, since we don't have that kind of accent anywhere. If you want to make difference in her translation, you'll probably have to use Western JPNese accent, it sounds more stronger, or rude at times (I'm not sure if that suits AJ actually..) for EP3's "Woah Nelly!", I think it's probably better off translating it to　just "うわ！"
I wouldn't mind helping on some translating.

Nah, you don't have to answer if you don't want to. Anyway, to your question. I don't think they will make Applejack to speak in Osaka accent. Personally I think they will make her talk like everyone else, just normal. For example, Scaredy Bat from Ruby Gloom. He speaks like in German accent, but in the japanese version he doesn't have one.

You said you can speak Chinese-- are you from China? (Actually, I know two words in Chinese. I know how to answer the phone, which is "wèi." Also, I know a card game from China called "tuo la ji" (=tractor/truck in English), and sometimes play it with a Chinese friend of mine.

I guess I can first explain that Japanese has three types of characters. Here's an example sentence that has all three of them:

私はジェスロです。 (I am Jethro.)

So, characters like です (pronounced "des" or "desu") are called hiragana. They get used to separate parts of sentences and conjugate verbs. There are 48 hiragana, and they make up all the possible sounds in Japanese.

Characters like ジェスロ (my name, jethro-- except in Japanese it sounds more like je su ro) are called katakana. There are also 48 of these, and they all have the same sounds as hiragana. Katakana get used in special situations, like for borrowed words from other languages, or to represent foreign names.

Then there are kanji, like 私 (watashi, which means "I" or "me"). These tend to get for nouns, the beginnings of verbs, and a few other things. There are tens of thousands of them, but they all conform to the 48 sounds in hiragana. They are also the most frustrating part of Japanese for non-native learners.

Japanese looks like this: 　私は自転車を食べる。あと、死ぬ。

Korean looks like this:　제가 자전거를 먹을 것이다. 끝나면, 난 죽을거야.

There's a certain "roundness" (for the lack of a better work) to Korean writing compared to Japanese.

I don't speak Korean, but I do know that some mechanics are the same. Like counting things-- in both languages, for some reason, different types of objects are counted differently based on their physical properties.

So the way you count people is different than the way you count pieces of paper, which are both different from how you count cars, etc.

does the japanese dubbed version of the show makes it more entertaining to watch? Or does it ruin the atmosphear of the show?

the japanese version has it's own theam song but does not stray from the original plot of the show. voice casting is arguably better but fails to show the emotions of characters.

whats your opinion? japanese version yay or nay?
