160725 No. 160725 ID: 4309f3
Hello, wonderful users of Ponychan! Nimble Wing here. In case you haven't already heard from some unofficial source, which I hope you haven't, I'm going to be serving as the site's !!Pinkie Pie from this point on. Specifically, I'll be tasked with taking !!Spitfire's place as the mod of /rp/ and /ooc/. (!!Spitfire is now !!Twilight, and is handling general site moderation. I seem to have confused some people; Astra's not stepping down.) Those two boards have become a large part of the reason I stay here, so I'm grateful that I have the chance to help keep them happy and running! This does, of course, mean that Artee will be stepping down as a moderator. I believe that he’s done an absolutely wonderful job of being a mod, and I’m honored that he believes I would be a good replacement. I’ve got some big shoes to fill. It’s not my place to try and explain reasons, though, so I won’t be delving into that.

Now, some of you guys might recognize me, but I'm certain that many of you do not. I came to Ponychan shortly after I was introduced to FiM way back when in mid-late 2011. After hopping between boards a bit, I ended up making my home on /oat/. And that's where I stayed for a while. I posted quite a lot back then, so any of you back in that era might know me. After the big drama-fest following the old /oat/ crackdowns, though, I ended up moving on over to /rp/. It's been my main board ever since! I’ve also been the one updating and maintaining the site’s FAQ and Contact Us pages for a good while now, so maybe you recognize me from that. Or something. I dunno. I DO THINGS, OKAY?

For those who don't know me, I usually just go by Nimble Wing (Element of Flight) !SonicFbkn. when I post. Depending on moods and RPs, I'll sometimes use the names Jewel (Officer of the Orion) !wahaHAqNBY or Orion "Star Hunter" !Space0GGSs. My main name will always be Nimble Wing, though, and I always keep my email on my posts. I’m most likely going to become more active now that I’ve got a bigger role on the site, so maybe that’ll help with… stuff. I believe that people would be more comfortable with me as a mod if they, you know, kinda knew me. Maybe. I hope.

I’ll certainly do my best to try and make a good mod, and I want all of you guys to let me know if I’m doing anything wrong! Here’s to a wonderful future here on Ponychan, and hopefully a decent span of time before I lose what’s left of my sanity looking over you crazy ponies!

Hee! I hope you'll have a really fun time within the ponychan moderator staff.
You'll have a giant list of fun parties to plan too for the coming years, I bet you'll find lots of ideas and stuff!

As for myself, I hoofie swear that this is not a consequence of anyone telling me to not mod anymore, or because of me not being fine with anything happening.
I've always had fun being one of /oat/'s super fun Pinkie posters. And when 2013 came, i thought I could be useful to keep all stuff a bit clean when a lot of folks were busy.
But there were a giant lot of little decisions to be made that really impact a lot on other people's ability to have fun and the whole thing is sometimes rather hard for me. Little things in myself sort of set me on edge sometimes on what I would be doing right or wrong and that made it a bit uncomfortable sometimes. I posted a giant lot on /oat/ and that also meant that I have to make sure I'm a good example when I post and that's sometimes uncomfortable too and then appropriately dealing with anyone disagreeing. Gosh. It's not been a terrible ride, with the wonderful help of the other mods, but still, I really longed for the time just to be a regular poster again.

Now that Nimble was about to come aboard and I heard he really liked Pinkie, I just took my opportunity to just go back to being silly old me.
I heard quite some nice things about Nimble and I'm positively sure he'll do a fantastic job as the new !!Pinkie Pie!

I'll be around for an hour or 2, should questions arise.

I hope you'll have fun with your balloons too, Nimble!

And yes, we'll have to schedule !!Ryuko for yet another time.

Friendly advice from someone who used to be in your position: stay active in the community for as long as you can. You're going to get burned out eventually, it's happened to everyone that's been there for long enough. If you don't stay active as a normal poster, your identity will become solely about moderating, and that's how you lose touch with the community and eventually lose interest in moderating

Meh, it wasn't that special. Not trying to slight Cross here because he's still my friend, but he didn't do a lot once he got modded. He and a couple others that were on around then kind of viewed getting modded as a prize, rather than an extra responsibility to take on. As for me, I was on at probably the most dysfunctional point in this site's moderation history and I was nothing special as a moderator myself, so hardly something to be envious of. Just keep on doing you. The current moderation team is better than we ever were

I hope so too. I think one of the reasons losing Artee is so bad is because he was an active poster on the site as well as being a mod. We already have enough mods that aren't active, we need more that post regularly.

I kinda feel like that's how a lot of people still view it, staff and user alike. The biggest issue is that the people who view it as a prize refuse to step down even when they can't or don't want to fulfill those responsibilities. Like it's a cherished special thing rather than just some extra work they have to do.

Site's been going strong this year, though, so I can't complain too much.

Nimble, I hope you know I am going to be a persistent cunt and use this very quote over and over again to push you into doing things in the thread. IF you don't keep your word, though. Which I have a feeling you will, since you're not usually the kind to flake on things. But, seriously, it's been too long -- for both of us, even, since I haven't had much participation lately either, and that's a damned shame. Let me know if you want to do anything any time soon. No arguments here. Again, I'm not meaning to shit on anyone here because I'm still friends with a lot of people from there, but I think the site could have benefited from a more robust policy of clearing out inactive or disinterested moderators, certainly back then, and maybe now (I don't follow these things closely enough anymore to be able to speak on current affairs with any kind of authority though). I think it encourages people to stay on and use the perks of being a moderator (fancy tag, IP searching, sort of symbolic role as head of the community) without doing the work

That's... not a good starting point for being a mod. Like, being a mod and not being familiar with the posters on the site is really not a good thing. I don't want to poo-poo on your party so much because you have done a lot for the site and your hiring makes sense. But yeah, that's not good. Hopefully you'll integrate into the community.

That's one of the biggest things that has me worried as a mod. I'm fairly unknown as a user, and it's been so long that I'm not sure where to begin fixing that. I'm guessing I'll start in /gala/ and/or /oat/. I'll just have to hope it goes well, because I dislike the idea of an unknown mod as much as you guys do.

He's an /rp/ guy, I must assume that he was hired, like !!Daring, as a representative / moderator of /rp/ (he even said that that was the aspect in the OP).

I think you were hired for /rp/ and it's fine if you don't get out too much beyond that. Don't push or force yourself into something you're not comfortable with. If they need someone for /gala/ or /oat/ they can find someone else. You just focus on what you want to do, which is roleplaying. Other stuff can come gradually, later, if you feel like it.

Well at least you recognize that issue, that's good. Well for starters, since you're an /rp/ and /ooc/ mod, I would suggest integrating with those boards. Like others are saying, you don't need to know /oat/ and /gala/ so much. Though since most of the users post there, you probably should integrate at least a little bit.
>>160775
I assumed when he said he didn't know anyone that that included /rp/ and /ooc/. Otherwise there isn't much of a problem. Though like I said, it's probably good to be at least somewhat familiar with where most of the users are.
>> No. 160778 ID: 58b397

Oh, I thought he meant only outside of it. If that includes /rp/, yeah, that's very bad. You should forget /gala/ and /oat/ and go and reintegrate with the /rp/ community - they are the reason you were hired, not /oat/, so you should make sure they are well satisfied, etc.

/rp/ is a weird sort of self contained board that doesn't always have a lot of overlap with the rest of the site. Like if I went there I'd know almost no one, despite being practically everywhere and posting and talking to people all the time. It's a dark area for me that's filled with the mysterious unknown.

"Need" or not, they're all expected to pitch in with all areas of the site. The /rp/ mod, such that the position exists, is just someone with specialized knowledge of the board and most of the time other moderators will defer to their judgement. That is somewhat true. I just don't want to overwhelm the guy. Attrition and fatigue is what causes us to lose good mods.

>>160787

No, but he was replaced a long time ago because he was so not around. Roger is slightly more around, in the sense that we can tell he exists and he sometimes does things.

This is true, though RP and OOC require a bit more attention since a lot of the issues there require specialized knowladge of canons and a watchful eye with more time then I have anymore. Which is why Nimble was hired to replace me as the mod for those boards specifically, solving issues there usually takes a lot longer then other places.

I don't think that's correct, at least not anymore. They all can pitch in all areas with the site, particularly spam / raids etc, but I don't think anyone on the team expects either !!Daring or !!Pinkie here to spend time outside of their respective boards.

I won't push too hard, I know. Getting back into the site is something I've been meaning to do for a while anyway. This is as good an excuse as any! Besides, would I be living up to Pinkie Pie's reputation if I didn't make friends with everyone ever?

>>160791
It's more of a matter of necessity. I worry about /rp/ and /ooc/, but if the other mods are unavailable, I'm fully able to go to the rest of the site. Same thing if I'm unavailable. Global moderation doesn't necessarily mean that I have to actively moderate the other boards! Just that I'm a part of the team that keeps the site in order.

A good question, especially given that he spent two or three posts in this thread explaining how much he hates the site. Dude, if you've got a replacement, this is your chance. Take a week or two to pass things along and free yourself. You could use the rest.

That's fine, as long as you realize that if there's a serious long-standing dramabomb between two users that you are very new to / unacquainted, don't rush to handle it instead of letting a mod who knows the board deal with it. We don't need 3s warnings for Manley.

He's replacing me as the mod for RP and OOC not as a mod.

Two different things. Due to personal things and a promotion I'm receiving at work, I'll no longer have the 3-5 hours it would sometimes take to solve an issue in RP and OOC

>>160794
Okay, saying "Letting the site drive me mad" and anything else, is clearly sarcasm. I don't need a break or a rest, I don't hate the site in any way shape or form. I don't want to quit or be replaced, I actually enjoy doing this job.

I'm letting go of a part of it because that's what is best for those two boards.

Not replace as in I'm picking up where he leaves off. If anything, that only applies to me taking Artee's place as !!Pinkie. Astra got moved to !!Twilight and is more of a general moderator as opposed to a specific /rp/ and /ooc/ mod. He's not leaving.

Now this seems contradictory. Astra had his job and Artee had his, Astra is if anything reducing his activity. You can't really replace two moderators at the same time, or you'll at least find it difficult since Artee is so damn active.

We should probably stop using the word "replace" here. Uuh... Astra's not leaving, Artee did, and I ended up taking Artee's old mod tag. There's no real replacement going on in the sense of trying to take somebody else's place entirely. There's just some stuff lining up together.

Well, I can see it going both ways anyways.
On one hoof, not being a mod allows me to post more freely and not feel to camped on any sides or too reluctant to simply enjoy things.
On the other hoof, the lack of obligations also means I don't have a necessity to be around. So quitting ponychan would technically be more easy. (lol, the ride never ends and stuff)

At the same time, not being a mod anymore, will mean I don't get to impede certain posters and so I wouldn't get too much of a hate base on that front anymore.
But it also means that I might be more vulnerable to have people call me out on my shitposting enough so i don't find my place in the community anymore.

Future will show, really.

A petty reason to be against this:
I kind of like the cosy model of ponychan of having mods based on ponies. Like with trips, mod actions even colour the board prettier and you feel like ponies are watching you. Well, that does sound gay, but nonetheless it has its charm over faceless anonymous mods.

Also, with identity, mods aren't unknown and easily distinguishable. If a mod acts badly towards you, you can address your complaint to that mod. As well, mods can set good examples trying to post as a good poster should. Moderation gets more closer to the userbase and people feel more comfortable with moderator action when they can sort of see where it comes from.

Anonymous moderation just looks blank, cold and can suffer on mod abuse.

There are ups and downs to both kinds of moderation. And, as I recall, we used to have anonymous moderators a while back. They would be given their mod tags, but their user identity wasn't shared. I'm sure there were reasons for the switch to the system we use now. Plus, as long as the mods don't act biased when making decisions, knowing who they are won't make much of a difference. If it's a matter of too much status or something, then just look at them as users. If we're not posting with our mod tags, we're not acting as moderators. Personally, I would much prefer to be known as Nimble Wing than as the user who is also !!Pinkie. But being able to receive public feedback on my performance as a mod is incredibly valuable to me. I want to make sure I'm doing the best I can, both as a mod and as a user, so people knowing who I am is good for me.

If only more than like four of them actually posted ever.

We've got a weird situation where technically all the moderators are "known", but they're around and posting so infrequently (or anonymously) that they're not really known at all. With Artee stepping down, the mods that people might actually know is dropped down to the Devs, Risk, and Yang (and sometiems Fennec). It's nothing I haven't said before, but for a site based on being social, a staff of recluses doesn't really set a shining and welcoming example.

Way back when, mods were anonymous, but the tags were added in response to a desire for accountability, IIRC. However, keeping anonymity with mod tags encouraged speculation about who was behind each tag, and was perceived to create an environment where users who were in the know about mod identities had more access to the mod team and thus greater influence on their decisions. Trying to maintain anonymity could also be quite stressful, and sometimes involved ruses which were usually ineffective.

There's much less mystique around mods these days, I'd say, and while it was admittedly sometimes fun to interact with the mysterious powers that be, overall I would think that's a good thing.

Y'know, perhaps that's the real issue here. The appearance that mods have any decision making power. That's what keeps inactive people clinging to their tags and draws up complaints about who is or isn't a moderator. Ultimately, the mods are shackled to the desires of the users, the people that really make the board what it is and keep people coming back. Mods have to represent and mirror the needs and wants of the users, even if the users don't have any say in who actually gets selected as a mod. So what leaves behind any semblance of power? Where do people pull that concept from?

So, I gotta question - any ideas for revitalizing those two boards, or are you essentially keeping watch over a graveyard?

Rename /oat/ to /party/ and throw /chat/ into the mix.

Nothing could possibly go wrong.

This is precisely is what is going to go down:

> Everyone cheers on Nimble, hoping he'd do a good job.
> Nimble does something controversial.
> Ponychan panics and raises le pitchforks at Nimble.

It's happened before, it will happen it him. God, I fucking hate Ponychan sometimes, this place is a huge circlejerk..

i agree with him. artee was on his best days utterly ineffective and on his worst days spontaneous and abrupt. during discussions of most site issues his primary state of being was sitting around and going "on one hand, blah blah blah. on the other hand, blah blah blah. in conclusion i think i will not think about it." it was intensely frustrating to do when other people were attempting to get things done all around him

but what was worse was i saw him do things like delete threads or posts because he was under minor duress from a handful of people regardless of rules and precedents. he seemed to slow down with that later on but seeing that pretty much ever is bad

of course anon may have different reasons, but thats why i think he was p much the worst mod on the site that actually did anything. which isn't saying a lot these days i guess since most of the really really shit mods are gone now.

Well, that's a difficult one to answer. As it stands, my main RP has been kinda fighting to stay above the water for a while, and so we've been trying to work to bring it back into full swing again. That's been difficult enough, so I'm unsure how I might revive a whole board if I'm having trouble with a single canon.
However, I do agree that it would be great to see the boards picking up again. I'd be more than happy to talk to you about possible ideas to bring it back to life! Once I actually get all settled in and whatnot, it might be my first big project or something.

>>160872
With Pinkie at the head, I'm sure everyone will be happy. I've just gotta smile, sing a quick song, bake up some treats, and I'm sure I could pull off an /oat/-/pony/-/chat/ merger with no drama!*
(*results may vary)

>>160873
If you're in a position of responsibility and there's nobody upset with you, you're probably doing something wrong. Mods can't be on the side of the users all the time, so of course they'll get mad at us every now and again. But hey, the site's still here, and the users aren't constantly at war with the mods. (Or, at least, not openly.) If I end up becoming an eventual target, I'll take the anger as best I can and explain my position. It's a bridge to cross if/when we come to it.

We love you, Artee. Please don't leave.

And personally while I feel the criticism Marceline gave holds weight, you were nonetheless the most active mod of them all, despite it being a volunteer job. Not to mention you were probably the best mod to hold the !!PinkiePie tag to date.

you never ruin the site, ever.

also, i thought artee was a decent mod tbh. yeah, there was a few times when he was a incompetent. not even gonna lie

but he knows when enough was enough. he wasnt too damn anal with everything too. which was nice.

you know that he does it for free maymay

yeah, i wouldnt be going super srs mode as a mod myself for free

but i would put enough effort to help out anyway i can.

It's a possibility, but it's not a guarantee, and that's no reason we shouldn't send some good wishes that it doesn't happen.

There's a few fair criticisms of you as a mod, but you weren't really all that bad, and I'm glad you're finally able to step down and rest like you wanted.

More importantly, though, I do really like you as a poster and hope you stay around. You bring a lot to the board and people enjoy your company.

Not that I can think of. There is a heavy trend, though. I guess let history be a reminder that you should always double check your actions and be prepared to face criticism and possibly repeal them when necessary.
