I woke and boke, went to class, finished a project, blazed again, went to another class, got high, played video games, greened out, and woke up in time to smoke one last bowl before midnight.

It was kind of like a normal day except I smoked like 15 bowls.

You can change who you are, but you can't change your history, and neither should you try to.

By default, we are simply the results of our pasts culminating into one coherent person. But that doesn't mean we're fated to follow any one event. Your therapist has introduced a new event: the idea that you can overcome this abuse if you try. I will also introduce an event. That event being the idea that you can introduce your own events. So far, the events you've given yourself have been...strange, to say the least. Which is probably part of why you need to see a therapist, if I'm to be frank Instead, you need to actively think things that the person you respect might think. If you can enjoy that person from the outside, then simply force yourself to be like that person. Focus your entire mind on being somepony else entirely. Discard anything that you think defines yourself, because that's no longer the person you want to be! Step outside the life you've got and experience a new life. Shock your system into adapting to all these new events. That's how you'll become who you really want to be.

And as a final bit of advice, past events may have shaped us, but the farther in the past they are, the less they effect who we are today. You can always overcome the past, and the harder you try, the faster it'll go.

Hey, I had the tragedy of the commons come up in one of my college classes. It's about how multiple parties who share a common land will eventually end up depleting it to their mutual dissatisfaction.

Enjoying stealing a free lunch "because you didn't get caught" is a tad off base because, in the tragedy of the commons, you have permission to use the land, it's not considered stealing because you are developing that land with other parties. The problem is specifically that there's no rule stopping those parties from overdeveloping that land. There's definitely a rule against you stealing lunch.
