OK Everypony! You've provided me lots of data and the results are in! Thank you!
Procedure: I took a sample of /oat/'s population and asked to give ages as seen in original post - then i found the average, median and mode of the dataset
Method: I used LibreOffice to get the results. I excluded ages that fell outside the 0 - 120 age range. I excluded ages that were too vague. For ages that implied or gave a range of values, i chose the middle value. I may have made one or two estimates when it was vague but clear enough to estimate.
Analysis:
Actual Age: Average Age: 23.7 Median Age: 24 Modal Age: 20
Desired Age: Average Age: 24.6 Median Age: 21 Modal Age: 21
Feel Age: Average Age: 34.1 Median Age: 26 Modal Age: 25
Discussion:
The population of /oat/ is, on average, older than the typical brony population (20.88) by 2.8 years, though we have to remember that the brony census was taken about a year ago, so the new one may shrink this distance by about .7, due to aging, resulting in a predicted difference of /oat/, on average, being 2.1 years older than the typical brony. /oat/'s median age is similar to the mean, and the modal age reinforces the idea that MLP:FIM primarily attracts ponies in their early 20s
/oat/'s desired age, on average is about a year older, which means /oat/ is probably generally optimistic about the future. the median and modal desired ages, however, tell a different story, with them both ringing in at 21, the legal drinking age in the u.s., indicating a lot of ponies on /oat/ probably can't watch ponies without a romantic table for two - one for their pone phantasmal significant other, and a glass of wine to go with it the numbers don't lie!
finally, /oat/ feels 10 years older than their average age, which is no doubt indicative of the maturity level of their choice of show, as friendship is something that some people spend their entire lives trying to get right and still don't get it... a very difficult task to take on indeed! the median age is also above the average age, but only by 2 years, and the modal age is above the actual by 5, indicating that watching ponies makes people feel older than they actually are, though note the 10 year difference may have been due to a few big outliers, but again, the median and modal are also higher, staying the conclusion
tldr: i didn't waste $23,000 and counting on education loans for a year of college in engineering oh so long ago - i did it for my ponies on /oat/ and it was worth every penny
