I'm fairly concerned with how things are, and maybe I'm a bit too late or just repeating what others have already said. But before I say anything I want to hear everyone elses thoughts on how they feel the population of the board is, it's content, the frequency of posts per threads, and if there is really a community left here or if everyone has either fucked off to other things in their lives or /rp/ has subdivided further into smaller communities within this one. I see far too many closed or ask/invite threads which seem quite unwelcoming to not only myself, but possibly to others and especially the rare newcomer.  Thoughts on Roleplaying#DiscussionOnly During my time on /rp/, I used to think that being a good roleplayer means knowing how to write a story, a good character, making no mary-sues or alicorns, etc. But that's only a small, somewhat insignificant part. I've come to realize that the strength of an RP largely depends on the relationships between the players. - People who are closer OOC are more likely to make better plot lines, agree more, get things done faster, and are more willing to make compromises. - People who hate each other OOC will usually do things to detriment the other, sometimes unintentionally, sometimes not. I've learned that RPing should be something fun to do that everypony can agree on. Not necessarily the best characters/plot line is required (but seriously, no Superman), but it needs to be fun for everypony.  Overlap - the short versionIs this a canon or something? Strictly speaking, no. Canons, as a rule, exist to provide a consistent storyline. As a result, everything someone's character does in the same canon - in fact, everything your characters do - becomes a part of that canon's history as time cheerfully marches on. This is more of a setting. Think of it as a multiverse kind of thing - some stuff happened there, characters met or didn't meet, and so on... there is a history, not every thread exists in a vacuum, but previous events {again, yours or other people's} only happened if you want them to have an effect on what's going on right now. It could be explained by alternate timelines, dimensions, unreliable narrators, but basically, consistency simply doesn't matter that much. So, what's the whole idea?  OC creation question for a noobHi, so, I want to start RP'ing here. I read the OOC sticky and it answered basically all of my questions, but I just need to know one thing before creating a definitive OC, are there any real limitations? I would probably be creating my own canon, and I realize that as long as I am in someone else's canon my OC needs to abide by the rules of said canon, but if I'm creating my own canon, can I basically just do whatever I want for my OC? Ex. If I created my canon and I wanted my OC to be a programmer/coder, or to be born/live in a certain time-period despite it not actually being canon in the show, is it still allowed?  Newbie...Completely new to this. I would really like if someone could help me out with some stuff. The terminology is a bit confusing, a set up is a bit weird, and I'm reluctant to message people in their canon. I know the rules say that is a common problem, and I can see why. I am comfortable around my brony community, and I'm probably totally doing this wrong, but I just feel like I'm intruding. I am very in to roleplaying and I am very flexible. I can play anything, so long as the concept isn't too morally messed up, but from reading the rules, it seems that I won't have to worry about that. I would love to rp with someone (a canon would be nice), but there is one problem. I am not on the computer very often. Which I think defuses everything ,_, All in all, from what I understood from the rules and what-not, is that the /ooc/ thread can be used for recruitment...and I might have interpreted that incorrectly... |
