Post metal you've been listening to.

This fucking band...BABYMETAL has been on my rotation so fucking much it's not even funny. Tho with winter on the way I can get into actual metal albums like Panopticon's latest, or maybe Behemoth's latest. I've heard it's amazing or some shit, I'm not a huge Behemoth fan though, so I'm gonna go into it with an open mind.

Post what you've been listening to, talk about metal, pretty much all metal is welcome, but I will openly mock you for liking glam metal. You can openly mock me for being this into weeb metal.

Devin's work is interesting, I'm not sure if it avoids the prog wank that keeps me away from a lot of prog, but it's still good.

When it comes to prog, I like old Mastodon. New Mastodon is alright, but it doesn't have the magic of stuff like Leviathan.

Not sure if entry-level, but here's another genre-fucking Japanese metal band. They're literally called Sigh...and this song has a bit of a disco break somewhere. Not gonna tell ya where though. ;-)

Just got done posting these guys in the recent /oat/ thread, but I seriously love these guys.

Is it bad that I actually enjoy the prog wank? I understand that a focus on sounding technical rather than sounding good can be detrimental, but the sound that's produced by doing that appeals to me.

YES. Just...just YES.

Nah, it's your taste. You think they're good, and to you they are. Personally I'm not a fan so they don't sound good to me.

Basically you can like whatever, it's the issue with boards devoted to vidya and music. We often think our tastes become "bad" if they deviate from any kind of board orthodoxy or from our own opinions. People need to stop being lame about "muh opinions". Like what you like. Personally, coming from a punk background, I kinda don't like stuff that's overproduced or just plain technical for the sake of being technical. It's why technical death metal is probably the one genre of extreme metal that can put me to sleep.

Like...this will always appeal more to me than a prog metal release. Partially because of the history and partially from just a straight up rawness that it has. I mean, there's also the cultural context that a lot of prog doesn't have either. Second wave black metal exists because of cultural reasons that prog could never reach.

But that's just my opinion. I'm a pretentious cunt like that.

To me, prog elements play into a special atmosphere that happens when simply too much shit is thrown at me at once and I can't follow any of it. It all just ends up sounding like noise, and for some reason, I just love it! I think it ends up almost calming me down the same way the noise elements in post-metal/rock do. Suppose I should post some tracks to demonstrate:

On the technical side of things, music like Fallujah kinda just breaks down into that enjoyable nothingness I was talkin about. This isn't a group I really listen to all that much though, but I might have to. If I'm understanding your tastes correctly though, then you won't like this. Not even sure if I like this, really. It sound pretty damn cool, but it...goes nowhere? too generic? I know I'm not articulating myself very well, but I kinda like it and I kinda don't. and I can't explain why I guess. Still, I'll share.

Now if you want a group I can actually recommend, Animals as Leaders can sometimes have that same effect on me, but in a...more controlled fashion? I''ll feel like I can follow it one moment, which is cool and all, and then it'll change on me and put me back into that noise haze again. I love it!

Oh, and then there's just stuff that melts my fucking face off! Not really sure where this factors into my above points, but I like these guys and this track has that "wall of noise that fucking crushes you" effect. Is this what people mean when they refer to a crushing performance? Cuz if I'm understanding that correctly, then this song is, like, the crushiest of performances!

Huh, I remember not liking Behemoth before, but I just gave'em a second look and they seem pretty cool. Not my usual thing, but still cool. You ever try Cradle of Filth?
